Chemical warfare in Algoa Bay

12 May 2014 By Alan Straton

Sycozoa Orange

Under the waves of Algoa Bay, there is "chemical warfare" on a daily basis between reef-dwellers like sponges, soft corals and sea slugs, who protect themselves from fishy predators with toxic organic chemical compounds. Studies of these organic compounds - called marine natural products - have captured the imagination of scientists the world over, particularly as some have been found to have anti-cancer properties. On May 15, Prof Mike Davies-Coleman, long-time researcher in the waters … [Read more...] about Chemical warfare in Algoa Bay

Take a Sail With Me – Pacer 27

20 February 2014 By Port Elizabethan

On Wednesday evening Darryl and I accompanied Russel on his Pacer 27 for a burn in Algoa Bay. The Pacer is a 27 foot sport boat with an asymmetric spinnaker - really quick off wind and addictive to sail on. The best conditions to sail on the Pacer demand a day of east wind to bring the chop and waves into the bay (the bigger the better) and lots of patience as we beat out to the Bell Buoy or further into the bay off Port Elizabeth. After an hour or more of beating out offshore the … [Read more...] about Take a Sail With Me – Pacer 27

iBhayi Apple

iBhayi Apple

Inspired by the tribute to the late Apple Founder, Steve Jobs, by Hong Kong teenager Jonathan Mak and also with the iXXXXX naming format of the Apple Products in mind I whipped together an Apple version of Algoa Bay called iBhayi. Now 'Macanatics' can add this to their designs; "Made on an iBhayi Mac" Design student Jonathan Mak's Apple tribute to Steve Jobs incorporates Jobs' silhouette into the bite of the Apple logo, a move that symbolizes the innovator's lasting presence at the … [Read more...] about iBhayi Apple

Barcelona World Race – Part of What PE Needs

1 January 2011 By Alan Straton

www.MyPE.co.za: Back in December 2007 I was asked to try and find a charter vessel willing to go and fetch the sailing vessel Delta Dore around 800 nautical miles off of the South Africa coast. Delta Dore had lost their mast and boom whilst sailing in the Barcelona World Race. See: Barcelona World Race Delta Dore Dismasted Near Port Elizabeth. As luck (or unluck!) would have it the owners of Delta Dore eventually decided to rather charter a Cape Town based recovery boat to tow Delta Dore to … [Read more...] about Barcelona World Race – Part of What PE Needs
