Is Algoa Bay’s Environmental Capacity Being Reached?

3 July 2011 By Alan Straton

Have you wondered what is happening to Algoa Bay as a possible future heritage site? Have you wondered if Algoa Bay is able to sustain over 60 Chokka Boats, 15 container and coal ships per day as well as oil rigs and oil cargo ships operating from 2 harbors? Have you ever wondered where your waste and toilet water goes? Have you wondered about the possible effect that this could have on the lives of marine animals and your own?

Penguin numbers are decreasing, dolphins and whales now swim different routes, squid is becoming scarce and fishing stocks are down.

Possibly the only thing lately increasing is noise, waste and water pollution! We have lost the blue flag status of our beaches and mountains of plastic and waste can be found on our shores.

Do we really care? No. We live in our homes, walk the beaches and don’t see the pollution. Not caring for our own unique marine environment will undoubtedly have direct consequences on our children’s future. We have become immune to pollution and immune to people calling for a change. Our environment is unable to become ‘immune’ to humanity and industrialisation and at the end of the day we will be the losers.

I have a saying that would be wise if we all applied to nature as well; “A good deal is a deal in which both sides benefit”.

Ocean Messengers is creating a responsible educational Water Book which will benefit our children and relationships with regard to water and waste management. The book will be made available to Grade 8 and 9 Scholars in the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan area. We are searching for more sponsors to ensure that the book can be distributed over a wider area. If you personally or your company feels it is time to show action before ignorance and create a good deal for both “humans and environment” you are most welcomed to enquire about sponsoring or to find out more from ocean.messengers@gmail.com

Our future, the future of Algoa Bay and its Heritage status depends on you.
