So Close for Local Sailor

6 April 2011 By Alan Straton

Since Sunday’s start of the Optimist Selections Regatta being sailed from the Algoa Bay Yacht Club (ABYC) until Thursday the fleet of 30 Optimists has sailed 12 races.

Port Elizabeth’s hope for honours, Jesse Martin from ABYC, is currently in 5th place on 45 points – 24 points adrift of the leader, Ruben Heard from Kwazulu Natal and 5 points ahead of 6th placed Ryan Barnardo.

The top five sailors will be selected to represent South Africa in New Zealand in December.

Wednesday’s sailing was postponed this morning as a warning of a westerly buster filtered through from Cape St Francis.

Tuesday’s racing saw 6 races being finished in a rising easterly. The light easterly of the first two races saw the lighter sailors making a play for honours. But, the 15 knots and rising easterly of the next four races sorted uout the ‘men’ from the boys’. In the second last race one sailor struggled for close on four minutes to cross the finish line – much frustration and tears for this young brave sailor.

The top five positions as at Tuesday 5 April 2011:

  1. Ruben Heard – 21.0 points
  2. David Wilson – 30.0 points
  3. Daniel Spratley – 36.0 points
  4. Emil Feuillette – 40.0 points
  5. Jesse Martin – 45 points

The points are based on a low point scoring system – the finish place for each is added up to get the points. Each sailor can discard his worst finish in each set of 6 races.

Hi Alan – where can we follow results from George? We have one little sailor Georgou Divaris (turned 11 yesterday) and we are all keen to know how he is doing.
