Has this ever happened to you?

14 March 2024 By Alan Straton

You are the head of a committee and a decision that your committee makes goes against what a stakeholder would like to see happen and what you recommended to the committee would morally be the correct action to take. The stakeholder then holds you personally responsible for this perceived slight towards them. You explain the situation to your stakeholder and that explanation is not heard or understood or believed or your stakeholder is so far up their own arse that they wouldn't know the … [Read more...] about Has this ever happened to you?

I see that ABYC is STILL In the Port of Port Elizabeth. Or is it?

28 May 2023 By Alan Straton

ABYC Marina

Whilst having a browse through the TNPA Port Development Framewrok plans for 2022 for this article - Why TNPA will NEVER Replace the Manganese Ore with a Waterfront - I saw a reference to the Algoa Bay Yacht Club on page 55 of the document. This is to be found on Page 55 in Table 2-9: Current Port Activities - Port of Port Elizabeth and, under the Other Services/Maritime commercial rows it reads; "Visiting cruise liners are presently accommodated at the MPT terminal. Vesselscall at the port … [Read more...] about I see that ABYC is STILL In the Port of Port Elizabeth. Or is it?

Manganese Ore – The 30 Plus Year Lie Continues

16 May 2020 By Alan Straton

Assmang ARM TNPA Manganese

Port Elizabethans are being taken for a furry feline... The report from the Evening Post dated 16 May 1990 above refers. The bottom line here is: "The authorities were lying then and they are lying now. They have had nearly 40 years to make the citizens of Port Elizabeth comfortable and happy with the Manganese Ore Dust facility but have continued trotting out the same platitudes and lies with every successive regime and political change ever since." Read the article and you could, by … [Read more...] about Manganese Ore – The 30 Plus Year Lie Continues

ABYC Arctic Seal [video]

24 January 2019 By Port Elizabethan

Visit and explore more Port Elizabeth videos. https://youtu.be/BgayeSJNBkw This very calm seal popped into the Algoa Bay Yacht Club to say hello on Saturday evening 24 May 2014. Apologies about the light. She lay on the side of the slipway, chilling and listening to the music - as she appeared in distress, the Sailing Commodore phoned our local Bayworld who will check on her in the morning. According to Bayworld these seals are not used to people so do not run away or recognise … [Read more...] about ABYC Arctic Seal [video]

RSA Magic

15 November 2018 – There was joy for South Africa as RSA Magic claimed victory at the Fareast 28R World Championship in China recently. The South African sailors emerged victorious out of 26 teams from 14 countries competing in the prestigious event. “It was a fantastic opportunity,” said two-time Olympian Roger Hudson, who skippered the boat along with Malcom Hall. “The championship was in a beautiful place in Lake Fuxian in south west China – a very tricky sailing venue and we … [Read more...] about East Cape Olympic Sailor Shows Far East Magic

It appears that August thinks that it has an ‘R’ in it

26 August 2018 By Alan Straton

Andrew Finn

The loose rule of thumb around the weather in Port Elizabeth is as follows: "For every month that has an 'R' in it, there will be wind." So it follows then that the months of May, June, July and August are normally idyllic with very little wind - not so this August though, as the wind has played havoc with the South African Sailing East Cape Dinghy Provincial Sailing Championships, forced Ironman to bring their bridge build forward and the cancellation of Sunday's Molo Festival of … [Read more...] about It appears that August thinks that it has an ‘R’ in it

Yacht Aerial Assisted – NOT in PE, though

17 July 2018 By Alan Straton

Foreign Yachts ABYC

Editor: On a personal note - the report below is indicative of the danger that we have placed sailors in after the eviction of the Algoa Bay Yacht Club from the Port of Port Elizabeth. From personal experience I have witnessed how members of the yacht club have taken sailors into their homes and to their businesses in order to fix anything wrong on their yachts. Most times for free and no reward at all. With the eviction of the club we lost an enthusiastic and important band of volunteers and … [Read more...] about Yacht Aerial Assisted – NOT in PE, though
