Pirates in the Bay
Editor: A report you WON'T read about sailing in Algoa Bay: It was a glorious day - flat seas and a steady 15 knot wind as the three of us exited the Port for a beachfront burn and hell for leather spinnaker run to the Bell Buoy. A fast reach along Kings Beach towards the Shark Rock Pier saw us slowing down a bit as we prepared to hoist the spinnaker and race out to sea. THAT was when it happened - these two knife wielding thugs came out of nowhere (we think they dropped from the end of … [Read more...] about Pirates in the Bay
ABYC Eviction – A Victim of a National Purge?
The Meerensee Ski-Boat Club in Richard’s Bay is going through the same woes that started with the Algoa Bay Yacht Club. According to a report in their newsletter the MSBC were given an ultimatum to increase their monthly rental to over R50 000 a month, for twelve months, and then permanently vacate the property. MSBC's view of the meeting with the municipal team was that they were very unpleasant and dismissive. As pointed out by MSBC though, the municipality they hold all the aces as … [Read more...] about ABYC Eviction – A Victim of a National Purge?

One last sail
One last sail from the building that ABYC was evicted from. Photo: Michael Sheehan. @fishie_sarah and I sailed a 420 Dinghy out the harbour to the Pier and back. Stunning day with dolphins alongside and bitter bittersweet memories. My thanks to all who have brought great joy to my life over the many years that I have been a member of the Algoa Bay Yacht Club. My thanks to to @fishie_sarah for making that last sail just so much better and brighter - you have the power! #abycpe #portelizabeth … [Read more...] about One last sail
On ABYC Eviction
Forgive me as I indulge myself on MyPE after a long battle with the TNPA - my 'friend 'AT' is probably squirming with delight at our misfortune but the outpouring of messages of support will, I think, vindicate the yacht club. We may have lost the battle but the hearts have shown the love that, for now, make this all worthwhile. Obviously the news is devastating to many members who have put their heart and soul into the club. It will be a huge wrench to hand over the club buildings and land … [Read more...] about On ABYC Eviction
