Eight Nelson Mandela Bay schools, with History and Tourism as subjects, will be participating in Heritage Month Commemorations from 19 to 23 September by visiting the Cradock Four Memorial site as part of an educational tour.
The National theme of this year’s Heritage Month is “Celebrating the Heroes and Heroines of the Liberation Struggle in South Africa”.
To this end, the contribution to the liberation of our country by Matthew Goniwe, Fort Calata, Sparrow Mkonto and Sicelo Mhlauli (all from Cradock) will be commemorated by exposing the youth to their stories.
These four men were killed in the vicinity of Wells Estate after they were intercepted by Security Police.
Cowan High School will visit the impressive site next to Coega Village from 10:00 am tomorrow, followed by KwaZakhele High School on 20 September, Masiphathisane High on 21 September and the Douglas Mbopha High School also on 21 of September. On Thursday 22 September Zanolwazi High and Molly Blackburn will get their turn, followed by Chapman and Gelvandale High Schools on 23 September.
This programme follows a workshop that was held on 6 September at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University in honour of five heroines, Mrs Nothuthuzelo Mabhala, Mrs Nosipho Dastile, Mrs Florence Matomela, Mrs Zodwa Sobukhwe and Mrs Lilian Diedericks.
An exhibition will be opened in their honour on 28 October at the award-winning Red Location Museum.
