Saturday morning 12 March saw the running of the first Afri-Save 5km Fun Run from the Multi Purpose Centre in Kwanobuhle. The event was organised by the Kwanobuhle Sport Forum together with Afri-Save Cash and Carry. Not even the heavy rain clouds that were hanging over kept the 165 anxious runners away from running the marathon. Young and old community members of Kwanobuhle joined in when the race started.
There was no entry fee charged to participate in the race, as the organisers wanted to give all community members an equal chance of being able to participate in the event. In addition the first 100 participants received a free Afri-Save t-shirt.
The first runner home was local athlete, Mzuvumic Lungu, who finished the race in a credible 34 minutes. In the women’s section the crowd cheered madly as tiny Nomaxabiso Bashe, a ten year old girl from Kwanobuhle, crossed the finished line first. The first 50 runners to cross the finish line each received a gold medal.
“When Mr Lungile Langbooi, general secretary of the Kwanobuhle Sport Forum contacted me with the idea of having a fun run for the community of Kwanobuhle, I was immediately intrigued. With an event like this we would like to give the people of Kwanobuhle an opportunity where as they can come and take part in a sport event free of charge and experience what it is like, there are thousands of undiscovered talented athletes in the community and this is an opportunity for them to showcase their talent,” said Mr Munir Jeeva, director of Afri-Save.
The race succeeded in creating greater awareness about sport in the community and was well supported. The organisers assured the community of Kwanobuhle that they can look forward to many more running events such as the Afri-Save 5km Fun Run.

That’s a nice idea. A race for more awareness about sports in the community, ’cause some people now just neglect sports to be a part of their daily lives.
