Relief efforts, coordinated by the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality’s Joint Operations Centre, are still continuing as rising water levels necessitate evacuations in some areas. Disaster Management is currently distributing 120 mattresses and 226 blankets to people accommodated elsewhere. No relief supplies can be distributed to people who choose not to leave their flooded homes.
Reports were received of flooding in Kwanoxolo, Walmer/Gqebera, Kleinskool, Salt Lake, Missionvale, Nooitgedacht (Booysen Park), Motherwell, Kuyga and Wells Estate amongst others.
In Salt Lake 119 people were evacuated to Nazareth Church, more than 75 people were evacuated from to the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University Missionvale Campus and people were also evacuated to the Motherwell NU30 Community Hall. At the Kuyga Community Hall 150 people are accommodated and assisted.
Roads closed at this stage are:
- Soudien Street/Old Uitenhage Road
- Third Avenue Dip (Newton Park)
- Seaview Road (Bushy Park area), and;
- Loodsberg Pass and the Wapasberg Pass are closed due to snow.
Roads flooded but not closed at this stage, amongst many others, are:
- M4/ Settlers Way (opposite North End Prison)
- Cape Road in the direction of St. Albans
- Grahamstown/ Ferguson Road
- Cape Road towards Draaifontein Road
- Walker Drive towards Samantha Way
We are still experiencing the removal of drums and other barricades at heavily flooded roads and request motorist to stop the deliberate removal of these obstructions as the lives of motorists, passengers and pedestrians are endangered. Transgressors will be severely dealt with if caught red-handed.
Donations: We are grateful for the generosity of Mr Dennis Haze of Summerbreeze Spar who donated 250 loaves of bread and pots of soup as well as the owner/management of Gelvandale Spar who donated 50 loaves of bread. Thank you to the Al-Imdaad Foundation who is assisting the destitute in Missionvale and Salt Lake at this stage.

Motorists are warned to be extremely careful and adhere to safe following distances as road surfaces are slippery.
