The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality wishes to thank residents for their understanding and cooperation during the extreme weather conditions experienced over recent days. With literally thousands of flood related calls and contingencies to attend to in so many areas, the Municipality’s resources and manpower were severely stretched. If we could not attend to every resident, to every household, to every community as quickly as we wanted to, we express our apologies and ask that this be interpreted against the magnitude of the disaster that we had to deal with.
The heavy downpours raised the annual rainfall recorded over the past year to 1020 mm – and that for the first ten months of 2012 only – making this year by far the wettest ever recorded in Nelson Mandela Bay.
As normal weather returns to the Bay in the course of Monday, the Municipality will continue to render the required relief services and begin a final analysis of the extent of the infrastructural damage suffered to buildings, bridges, roads and stormwater and electrical infrastructure.
In the interim, the Municipality appeals to motorists to continue driving with extreme caution and be on the look-out for potholes. An urgent appeal is made to parents to keep their children from playing or swimming in any waterlogged areas, such as ponds, pools and rivers, as this is not safe.
Donations of blankets, food (such as bread, maize meal, margarine, soup, margarine, peanut butter and sugar), nappies and plastic buckets will be most welcome. Please drop this off at the ground floor security desk, Fire Station Building, Walmer Boulevard, South End. Residents who wish to arrange for donations to be collected, can call the Disaster Management Centre at 041 501 7981.
