R16 million service delivery trucks and ambassadors launched

12 December 2015 By NMB Communications

Service delivery in Nelson Mandela Bay received a major boost with the introduction of 214 service delivery ambassadors at R2,5 million for the first phase in 22 wards and the acquisition of 20 trucks at just over R13,5 million on Thursday.

The ambassadors are employed to be the eyes and ears of the municipality in the different wards specifically to report water leaks and other municipal related problems and the new vehicles (16 maintenance trucks, 3 pail trucks and one Super Sucker) will replenish an aging fleet.

“The occurrences of water leaks in our city are high. Our target is to get the percentage to 10% or below.

“Service delivery must be intensified, the expansion of Nooitgedacht must be accelerated as well as the improvements of the Fishwater Flats Water Treatment Works and the desalination plant for industrial water must also be speeded up.

“The water ambassadors are going to help us save millions of rands due to water losses and directly help us grow our revenue and economy. The department will also address the outcry about potholes, eradicate the bucket system and deal with illegal connections.

“If we work together we can rebuild the city to what we want it to be. We want the city to be the cleanest city in the country,” Mayor Jordaan said.

The service delivery ambassadors will undertake door-to-door visits to educate communities about the importance of water conservation as well as deal with water, sanitation and other related municipal complaints.

The 16 maintenance trucks will be used to respond to pipe bursts, water leaks and blockage removals and the other four are replacing vehicles used to service buckets.
