The Weekend Post Ocean Racing Series continues to draw hundreds of people to the Nelson Mandela Bay beachfront on a fortnightly basis, much to the delight of local traders. No matter what the weather, the Series continues to ensure that families from around the world get to enjoy the cities beachfront on alternate Sunday morning’s. This past Sunday, despite the strong on-shore winds, the Series attracted over 280 participants and many more spectators to Hobie Beach for Round 5 of this 12 race day Series which continutes till March next year. Included in the field of participants were 3 from East London, 4 from Welkom, 2 from Johannesburg and a visitor from Norway, Jostein Trodahl.
“Last year during my stay in Port Elizabeth I enjoyed watching an Ocean Racing Series event from the pier. This year I planned my Port Elizabeth holiday to coincide with the Ocean Racing Series so that I could take part.” said Trodahl who returned to Norway on Monday after taking part in the Dis-Chem 1km Ocean Swim, finishing a very respectable 32nd overall.
The Series draws hundreds of spectators and participants to Hobie Beach from 8am on Sunday mornings till after 10:00 am when most disperse to enjoy the facilities and shops in the vicinity. “We can always tell when it’s an Ocean Racing Series weekend as we see an early than usual start to trade at the Boardwalk,” said News Cafe manager Lindy Nel who herself has taken part in one or two of the Series swim events. “There’s always a great vibe on race days as families come back from the beach sporting their event t-shirt and medal.”
This weekend’s event also saw the realisation of two dreams for the Reach for a Dream foundation with a young 17 year old from Pretoria having her dream of a deep sea fishing trip being realised by the Fensham family whilst an 8 year old from George, who asked for lots of dolls, had her dream realised by participants from St Dominics Priory school.
The next race in the Series takes place on Sunday 18th December with online registration recommended.
