The loss of power at the Loerie Water Treatment Works due to the 66kV tower that was damaged in the wind yesterday is a serious concern to the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality as the reservoirs being fed by the Loerie Water Treatment Works – that supplies large parts of Nelson Mandela Bay – are currently running low.
Workers from the Electricity and Energy department worked around the clock after it became apparent that the electricity supply to numerous rural areas such as Van Stadens Gorge, Thornhill, Rocklands, Witteklip, Gamtoos, Loerie amongst others was interrupted as a result of the problem on the Summit/Ditchling line.
Work is progressing well at this stage and although no specific time frame is available, we hope to restore supply by tonight.
Residents from areas such as KwaNobuhle, Lorraine, Walmer, Westering, Gelvandale and Malabar are requested to only use water for essential use. The watering of gardens, filling of swimming pools and water features as well as the washing of laundry, amongst others, should ideally be postponed until the electricity supply is restored.
Due to the outage, we are unable to treat and pump water into the city and if the current supply is not used sparingly those areas could be without water.
