In a ground breaking partnership, Algoa FM has joined forces with Nkqubela FM (KQFM) to offer internships in the various departments at the station to help boost broadcasting skills in the province.
“We decided to offer internship programmes to help overcome the skills challenge in the radio industry predominantly amongst the previously disadvantaged people,” says Algoa FM managing director, Dave Tiltmann. “We have committed our workplace as an active learning environment and are offering training opportunities to unemployed graduates in the market place to improve their employment prospects.”
There are currently three interns working at Algoa FM for a period of six months. Two are working in the production studios and one is part of the news team.
All staff in the various departments at Algoa FM are keen to pass on their skills and knowledge. “Our presenters are always willing to share their expertise,” says Tiltmann. “We also get a lot of grade 11’s coming here for career guidance and observation.”
News reporter intern, Xoliswa Fleurs, has been at the station for three weeks. “I’m very excited to be working with the Algoa news team,” says Fleurs. “A few of my reports have already been used for the news broadcasts.”
Commenting on the internship, KQFM station manager Monwabisi Olivier said, “We are happy about Xoliswa’s move to Algoa FM. This shows that we are meeting our objective of developing people from grassroots level and taking them to a higher level.”
Nkqubela FM is based in Zwide and has been running for six years.

It is so great to see companies in Port Elizabeth who are willing to offer internships. The beginning of the year I had to look for an internship to complete my Diploma in Public Relations and I was very disapointed in Port Elizabeth as so few were willing to help. If companies don’t offer students and young people a chance to showcase their work, how are you suppose to get somewhere? Experience is key. Thank you to the few willing companies who support internship programs.
