Nelson Mandela Bay Water Supply STILL Under Pressure

18 February 2020 By NMB Communications

The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality would like to inform residents and business owners that the water supply situation has not changed much. Intermittent supply or no water is still experienced in some areas of the Metro. This is primarily due to a continued deficit of 40 ML of water in the system. Water levels in the reservoirs are fluctuating, depending on demand.

Currently the most affected reservoirs are the Greenbushes Reservoir, the Fairbridge Height Reservoir and the Scheepershoogte Reservoir.

The areas affected are:

  • Kabah
  • Rosedale
  • Thomas Gamble
  • Mountain view
  • Scheepershoogte
  • Valleisig
  • Fairbridge Heights
  • Strelitzia
  • Winterhoek Park
  • Vans Estate.
  • Bridgemead
  • Colleen Glen
  • Rowallan Park
  • Kuyga

As a temporary measure water tankers are being mobilized to the affected consumers. For the exact positions of water tankers, residents and businesses are requested to call 0800205050 or the Ward Councillors.

The deficit experienced is mainly attributable to the following:

  • The NMBM is unable to get full water allocation from the Gariep Dam because the permanent canal repairs have not been completed.
  • The Impofu Dam is low at 16,66%, while the overall level of our main supply dams is 27.9%.
  • The average water consumption in the Metro over the last 3 months has been above 290ML/day – exacerbated by the heat wave experienced.
  • Loadshedding has been a compounding factor, as the NMBM was unable to treat and pump water during loadshedding, while the demand continued to be high due to the high temperatures.

Targeted water consumption for city and residents:

  • 250 megalitres per day
  • 50 litres per person per day
  • Current consumption: 290 megalitres per day

Residents and business are urged to reduce their water consumption.
