Localized flooding is affecting several areas in Nelson Mandela Bay as a result of flooding in the city and surrounding peri-urban areas.
Although the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality in conjunction with the South African Weather Office, Provincial Traffic Department, South African Army and Emergency Services pro-actively informed communities about the imminent persistent rain, the focus of the Joint Operation Centre is to prevent the loss of lives. Staff at the centre handled more than 274 calls today of which most were about water in yards of private properties due to rising water levels even though no direct threat were identified in most of these cases.
Light rain is expected today.
