Links to Tsunami Coverage

11 March 2011 By Alan Straton

After Thursday’s 6.3 magnitude earthquake and fears of a tsunami in Honshu, Japan – the unthinkable happened on Friday – an 8.9 magnitude earthquake hit Northern Japan and triggered tsunamis smashing onto the coast of Japan.

Even although the epicentre was 373 kilometres from Tokyo, residents there still felt the tremors.

Dramatic live footage of the tsunami shows ships careening over land, masses of cars and homes being swept away and destruction of infrastructure on a massive scale not seen since the atom bomb was first unleashed on our world.

Many people are saying that the destruction and loss of human life will make the 911 tragedy pale into insignificance.

Buildings on Fire being swept along by the tsunami with cars and ships across farm land: (look out for cars trying to flee the tsunami).

Imagine a wall of water at least 4 metres high hitting the coast at 500 kilometres and hour and you will get an idea of how much destruction can be caused.

The video below shows debris, houses, cars and ships being swept along by the sheer force of the water – when nature gets going don’t stand in her way!

The tsunami reached Sendai airport runway after the 8.9 quake:

Kamaishi is no stranger to eartquakes and tsunamis as this is the third such incident since 1896.

In 1896 the city of Kamaishi was completely destroyed by the Meiji-Sanriku earthquake which struck on June 15 at 7:32 pm whilst families were celebrating Boy’s Festival on the beach. The earthquake measured an 8.5 magnitude whilst the waves on the Iwate coast reached as high as 24 meters in places – the highest ever recorded in Japan.

In 1933 Kamaishi Bay was also destroyed after another Sanriku earthquake.

Kamaishi did have a tsunami protection boom installed to help stop such destruction again. It seems as though it did not work, though.
