If the Water is too Cold you may Run

23 June 2011 By Zports

Africa’s water sport capital, Nelson Mandela Bay, kicks into action again this weekend with the first of 3 race days in the Winter Ocean Racing Series taking place at Hobie Beach on Sunday morning.

The Ocean Racing Series, which attracts extensive media coverage for the cities claim of being the water sport capital, offers its followers the opportunity to showcase the Metro as an ideal water sport playground, no matter what the season. The three part winter Series sees 4 events taking place on the last Sunday of June, July and August ahead of the start of the Series Season 7 in October.

Sunday’s program of events includes a 1km Ocean Swim, a 5km Beach Run, a 5km Beach Walk and the kids 1km Beach Run. Water temperatures in Algoa Bay are typically between 16 degrees and 18 degrees in the winter months offering open water swimmers a great opportunity to still get out there and stay fit. Whilst wetsuits are encouraged, expect to see a handful of the die-hard costume clad swimmers in the mix on Sunday morning with all the events starting at 10am. Complimentary hot chocolate will be served to all participants before and after the event whilst the Rotary Club of PE Sunrise will be providing a water table at the halfway point of the 5km beach events.

Entry fees are just R60 for the swim event, R40 for the beach events and R20 for the kids 12 years and under in the 1km beach run and will be taken on the beach from 9am. For further information call Zports on 041 484 7860.
