I Will (try to) Never Take a Media Event for Granted Again

25 April 2012 By Alan Straton

Only two days to go to the start of the Boardwalk Hobie 16 Nationals and we kick off festivities with a Press Launch this evening at the PE (Hobie) Beach Yacht Club.

As I sit on the balcony I can smell tempting flavours from the kitchen and hear the clink of glasses and cutlery being put out for hungry journos who will come and eat their full. Maybe they will stay to have a Fanta Brown or two and have a couple of laughs.

The amount of time that has gone into organising this evening’s little event is astonishing. Agonising over invites and delivery was followed by meeting at Hobie Beach at 12:00 midday so that today sponsor representatives from both The Boardwalk and Sebago sponsors could begin setting up banners and backdrops, sound and video, whilst Sonia Cresswell in the kitchen has been keeping me supplied with coffee. By the way the PE Beach Yacht Club Cafe is open for meals and offers a great view of the Shark Rock Pier from the mezzanine level and balcony.

One side of me is tempted to say that; “Yes, a lot of effort must be put into wowing the media with food, content, images and a stunning setting” and the other side of me says; “Bugger, why do we need to go to this effort to get journos to cover an event which is newsworthy and brings solid cash into Port Elizabeth?” Whatever the answer is I am just glad that we can use this bash as an excuse to have a couple of laughs and then go back and sing, sing the good news.

And my answer to all the hard work going on around me? Headphones on, Rammstein assaulting my eardrums, laptop open, camera at the ready and a little bit of an article to prove that I am working. OMG I just love my job!

Then there is the online media (specifically referring to bloggers) that often give coverage to an event or place and never get an invite to media events or openings.  I’m not hinting, just saying.
