Hump Day Sailing

Wednesday, the dreaded third day of the work week, arrives all too quickly and the thought of two more days with the nose to the grindstone needs a pick me up of epic proportions.

The Algoa Bay Yacht Club in Port Elizabeth epitomises the ‘Friendly Heart’ of the ‘Friendly City’ on Wednesdays with an open invitation to the public to hook their fingers in a six pack, throw some jeans and flat shoes on and pop on down to the club for a sail on the briny. Skippers eager to pass on the lore and fun of sailing will allow you onto their boats for a sundowner sail.

Start time is around 6:00 pm and you would be well advised to stand with your six pack proudly on display from around 5:30 pm – take aways are available from the pub.

Some valuable tips:

  • Bring something warm
  • Only persons with sunny dispositions need apply
  • Sailing is thirsty work for the skipper so be prepared to share your beer
  • Wear flat shoes
  • Cocktail dresses and Penguin Suits will result in a considerable amount of embarresment – wear something sensible that you don’t mind getting wet or slightly dirty

  • Asking questions and displaying a willingness to work on the boat will get you invited back
  • Passing comments about how ugly the skipper or his yacht is will result in the skipper drinking all your beer.

The opportunity to see the Port Elizabeth beachfront and harbour from the deck of a yacht whilst supping sundowners is a small piece of magic sure to wipe away all your stress.

Make sure that you book a table at the popular ABYC Chartroom Restaurant well in advance of your sail, though.

Some yachties even hold Children's Birthday Parties at the ABYC and then take the sprats for a quick burn around the bay!
