Today I perceived the need to extract information from my Standard Bank accounts going back to December 2009 so I hopped onto Internet banking.
Extracting info is logical – I needed to analyse payments made to a certain account BUT could only extract information going back 365 days. Any further and I needed to go into my branch.
So I decided to run a comparison between Standard Bank and my current favourite, Capitec. Wanna be bored about how much I actually love a bank? Then ask me about Capitec.
I discovered that Capitec allows ONLINE access to two years of account history (as opposed to Standard Banks one year). Capitec does not have a nifty sort facility but that is why Bill Gates wrote MS Office and an Open Source community wrote Open Office -try it, it is free to download, easy to install and pretty intuitive to use.
So off I toddled to Standard Bank to request a specific historic set of statements and the CRUX – they only give an entire history and the KICKER it is going to cost me R20.00 per PAGE – Holy Cow.
I then popped in to Capitec and asked them what they will charge for a printed historical statement and their charge is R3.00 for FIVE pages.
How is it possible that Standard Bank can charge R20.00 per page and Capitec R0.60 per page?
I believe that Capitec have now released a Super Duper Debit card that will allow internet transactions. One more step to complete freedom from excessive idiotic bank charges – Steve and his mates had better watch out!
