All opinions below are solely my own…

28 March 2016 By Alan Straton

Skinnerbek Dishing The Dirt

Lets be honest here - if you have to preface anything you write and say with these words; "All opinions below are solely my own and may not reflect the opinions of my employer" - then maybe you should be questioning WHY you work for that employer? Have you ever seen anyone write; "All opinions below are solely my own and may not reflect the opinions of my COUNTRY." Even a country grants it's citizens freedom of speech, so why should an employer NOT encourage freedom of speech and debate … [Read more...] about All opinions below are solely my own…

Friday Rant – Help save Richmond Hill

19 September 2014 By Alan Straton

Friday Rant

For the first time in a long time I stand aside in awe and wonder as the Richmond Hill community overtake and leave me in the dust with their rant. #justsaying - There are people in Port Elizabeth far grumpier and more versed in the art of grumpy than I! Cue slow clap for the masters of the art. See the comments here: Help Save Richmond Hill. … [Read more...] about Friday Rant – Help save Richmond Hill

Bonus Friday Rant – Slow death for seal pup

25 July 2014 By Alan Straton

Seal Pup Net

Courtesy of SANPARKS and the Addo Elephant National Park I got to overnight on Bird Island on 22 July 2014. On our travel in we spotted this poor seal pup on Black Rock - not having any equipment on board to catch or even to release the poor little bugger from his prison net we could only report his misery and hope that someone else would be in a better position to assist. One cannot say for sure just how the seal pup in the image below got entangled in the net around it's neck. I find it … [Read more...] about Bonus Friday Rant – Slow death for seal pup

Friday Rant – Budget

18 July 2014 By Alan Straton

Friday Rant

A client recently asked me to do some work and instructed me not to charge as there was "No Budget". So, I took a leaf out of the client's book and wrote to the Municipality asking them to not send me my rates account this month as there was "No Budget". Funny - the Municipality is still laughing ......... … [Read more...] about Friday Rant – Budget

Friday Rant – Employment Practices

13 June 2014 By Alan Straton

Skinnerbek Dishing The Dirt

Surely by now being coloured or white, female or male and of a certain age also qualifies one to be classed as a disabled candidate? As per: The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality is committed to employment practices that redress past imbalances in respect of race, gender, creed and disability, and as such the relevant policy will be considered during selection and placement. Applications are invited from suitably qualified persons for appointment to the under-mentioned position. Persons … [Read more...] about Friday Rant – Employment Practices

Belated Friday Rant – More Abuse of Ratepayers Funds

8 February 2014 By Alan Straton

Skinnerbek Dishing The Dirt

The following message to "All Media" was sent by Nelson Mandela Bay Communications Officer, Kupido Baron at 11:43 pm on 7 February 2014. Please note that the message ONLY promotes ONE political party - once again I find it a gross misuse of ratepayer's patience and funds when a municipal employee sees fit to send such a message ad wonder if Kupido will be claiming overtime for doing so? The full message sent: to Communications, Joy.Peter, To All Media Hon. Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula has … [Read more...] about Belated Friday Rant – More Abuse of Ratepayers Funds

Friday Rant – The Snorting Monsters

2 August 2013 By Alan Straton

Picture the following: I am standing in front of the deli at my local supermarket and a pleasant looking fellow stands next to me also contemplating what gastronomic delight he shall be taking home and lovingly unwrapping for lunch. All is at peace in the world as we both gaze at the tempting delights on offer. And then the peace is shattered as he, without warning, snorts through his nostrils right next to my ear. My shattered nerves scream in revulsion as the snorting contains enough … [Read more...] about Friday Rant – The Snorting Monsters

Friday Rant – Has PE got the world’s best drivers?

8 February 2013 By Alan Straton

Skinnerbek Dishing The Dirt

Port Elizabeth - or the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro as the authorities like to call it - must have the best drivers in the world. The Metro's Traffic and Licensing department reports in the Special Council Agenda of 24 January 2013 that it has not met its traffic fine targets because; "As the broad majority of road users complied with road rules, fewer traffic fines were issued." The target was 10 fines per officer per day for the quarter ending 31 December 2012, but officers issued only six … [Read more...] about Friday Rant – Has PE got the world’s best drivers?

Friday Rant – Q&A Hijacker

21 September 2012 By Alan Straton

Skinnerbek Dishing The Dirt

During Question and Answer time at Tuesday morning's PetroSA/NMBBC breakfast a young lady stood up and proceeded to ramble on about her business organisation (a rival to the NMBBC) under the pretext of supporting the lobbying for the siting of the Mthombo Refinery in Coega. The she went on to demand that the uniforms for Eastern Cape Traffic Officials be sourced in the Eastern Cape and not the Western Cape. It is a mystery to me quite what this young lady expected to achieve above the … [Read more...] about Friday Rant – Q&A Hijacker

Bonus Friday Rant – Even (So Called) Private Education Suffers

17 August 2012 By Alan Straton

Skinnerbek Dishing The Dirt

I have been giving advice to a friend with regards to his better half's problems in receiving her final pay after resigning from a local higher education business (I would have said institution but don't think they deserve the title). After much to-ing and fro-ing with the local General Manager and then an escalation to the National Office of Greed her pay was finally settled this morning. This is not the first complaint that I have had of this particular instituion of NON-Service … [Read more...] about Bonus Friday Rant – Even (So Called) Private Education Suffers

Friday Rant – Money Doesn’t Buy Class

20 July 2012 By Alan Straton

Skinnerbek Dishing The Dirt

So there I was minding my own business (i.e. looking for Tweeters of a Journalist bent to add to the MyPR list) when I came across a Tweet from one David Bullard - he of the whiskey tossing Cuban Cigar chomping bent who became too hot for the Sunday Crimes. Essentially I think he was trying to say WTF! (Whisky Tastes Fantastic!) when he tweeted the image below. https://twitter.com/lunchout2/status/224787860639854594 Now the E500 Cabriolet's January 2012 base price, including Carbon … [Read more...] about Friday Rant – Money Doesn’t Buy Class
