Hundreds of open water swimmers and fun runners are expected to attend the final round of the popular Nelson Mandela Bay Weekend Post Ocean Racing Series at Port Elizabeth’s Hobie Beach this Sunday morning 3 April 2011.
Season 6 of the Series started in November last year and concludes on Sunday with Race day 10 kicking off at 9:00 am, having already attracted over 4,000 entries through the season. The Series, Africa’s most popular family lifestyle beach event, continues to dominate national sports television with over 1,000 minutes of footage promoting Nelson Mandela Bay as Africa’s Water Sport Capital.
The most popular event of the Season has been the Dis-Chem Ocean Swims, closely followed by the Varsity College 5km Beach Run and the Kids 1km run, each attracting hundreds of participants on race days. Sunday’s program starts with the Varsity College 5km Beach Walk and the must watch, Kingfisher FM Celebrity run which will see all the top jocks from the radio station taking part. The Dis-Chem ocean swims start immediately thereafter, giving local participants a final opportunity to prepare for next weeks Ironman events at the same venue. The Varsity College 5km Beach Run and Kids (12 and under) 1km Beach Run are the last events to set off shortly after 9am to create a spectable of 5 simultaneously running events at PE’s most popular beach.
With over R20 000 in prizes, medals and USN Hydration, the Ocean Racing Series continues to offer great value for money with entry fees kept to a minimum at just R60 (swim), R40 (run/walk) and R20 (kids 1km Run) for the Series members or an additional R20 late entry fee for non-members who are welcome to take part.
Entries for Sundays event will open from 7:30 am on the morning at Hobie Beach and will close at 8:45 am ahead of the 9:00 am start. Prize giving for the Kids 1km Beach Run takes place at 10:00 am together with the realisation of a dream for the Reach for a Dream foundation. The prize giving for round 10 will be combined with the overall Series prize giving function which takes place at News Cafe (Boardwalk) from 11:00 am where all Series members will stand a chance of winning lucky draw prizes valued at over R30 000 including an Orca wetsuit, a R10 000 Varsity College School of Business Bursary or a 1 year membership to the Profiles Health Club.
