Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality’s Executive Mayor, Cllr Zanoxolo Wayile, expressed his shock upon learning that Nelson Mandela Bay Ratepayers Association member Kobus Gerber sent a letter to his members claiming that the Mayor will announce the lifting of water restrictions today.
In his e-mail, copied to most media houses, Gerber wrote as follows:
“Dear Ratepayers. The letter… drawn up by Adv Graham Richards send to The Mayor, Municipal Manager and the Chief Financial Officer combined with your e-mails to the Department of Water Affairs helped to lift the water restrictions. The Mayors office contacted us on Wednesday at 16:30 to notify us that the Mayor will make a public statement on Friday (today) to lift the water restrictions. We thank you all for your participation in this matter”.
Executive Mayor Zanoxolo Wayile said he never made such a commitment and neither did anybody in his office and the e-mail message at best can be considered a deliberate fabrication.
Mayor Wayile said he respects the good working relations that exist between the Municipality’s Water and Sanitation Division and the Department of Water Affairs.
Water restrictions remain in place.
