The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality is busy reconnecting electricity supply to the regional offices of the Department of Education today. This comes as the Municipality received a strong signal today that the Department of Education (DoE) would work to settle outstanding amounts owed by some Section 21 schools in Nelson Mandela Bay for municipal services.
In terms of the agreement, the Department has finally acknowledged ultimate responsibility for the debt and has committed to pay a significant amount by Tuesday 26 January 2011. Both parties will set up a task team that will, among other things, look deeper into the specific accounts of each of the schools for which payment is due in order to unlock further payments and ensure the accounts are manageable going forward.
This most welcome development follows a meeting held between the Executive Mayor and the DoE’s Head of Department held yesterday (Sunday 16 January 2011) wherein they discussed how the outstanding amounts could be paid and how the Department could manage the account going forward.
Speaking at media briefing today about municipal interventions to improve education in the Bay, Executive Mayor, Cllr. Zanoxolo Wayile, said he was very happy that the matter was finally being resolved as the payment of municipal services is important financial sustainability for any city to be able to address its developmental and service delivery objectives.
The municipality will respond at a later date on the proposed way forward.
