The death toll during the Eastern Cape winter initiation season reached 24 on Monday, the provincial health department said.
An initiate from Nyadeni, in the OR Tambo district, was assaulted on Sunday and admitted to the ICU at Nelson Mandela Academic Hospital, where he later died, spokesperson Sizwe Kupelo said.
Of the 24 deaths across the province, 16 have occurred in the OR Tambo district.
Of the remaining deaths, three initiates have died in the Chris Hani district, two in the Alfred Nzo district, one in Buffalo City metropolitan municipality, one in the Amathole district and one in the Joe Gqabi district.
