The Eastern Cape winter initiation season has closed with a death toll of 28, the provincial health department said on Tuesday. This figure is less than during the same period last year, when 37 initiates died, spokesperson Sizwe Kupelo said. A number of initiates still remained in hospitals in the province. The death toll during the Eastern Cape winter initiation season reached 24 on Monday, the provincial health department said. An initiate from Nyadeni, in the OR Tambo district, was assaulted on Sunday and admitted to the ICU at Nelson Mandela Academic Hospital, where he later died, spokesperson Sizwe Kupelo said. The number of initiates who have died in the Eastern Cape over the winter season has now risen to 20, the provincial health department said on Wednesday. Spokesperson Sizwe Kupelo said out of the 20 deaths, 12 have occurred in the OR Tambo district. Four initiates have died from circumcisions thus far this season, the Eastern Cape health department said on Sunday. Spokesperson Sizwe Kupelo said the four boys had been from the Port St Johns, Qumbu, Ngqeleni, and Chris Hani districts. Training to reduce circumcision deaths
A group of 31 male professional nurses in the Eastern Cape Department of Health (DOH) who are responsible for the oversight of traditional circumcision programmes have been undergoing specialised training in preventing and stopping bleeding in boys suffering from Haemophilia. Haemophilia is a bleeding disorder that affects mainly males, about 1 in 10 000 boys. Last year 47 deaths occurred amongst initiates from the Eastern sector of the province.
