Community Business Directory, Event Listings, News and Views from Gqeberha, Nelson Mandela Bay

Do you recognise any of these names?

24 September 2014 By Alan Straton

I am going out on a limb here.

The Nelson Mandela Bay Metro in terms of the Municipal Finance Management Act is very good in publishing the names of bidders in respect of advertised competitive bids, above the threshold value of R 200,000 (All applicable taxes included).

On 13 August 2014 a large number of business submitted bids for the Construction of Sidewalks and Cycle Paths in our fair city (Bid reference SCM 15-5/C).

All tenderers are evaluated mainly on BBBEE Status, Total Price of Bids and Local percentage content of goods offered.

What always interests me is that here we see companies bidding for fairly large contracts but if you do a search for them in the MyPE Business Directory or even on Google or Bing or social media sites for that matter you will NOT find any form of online presence for them.

Some interesting names from the list below are: Faku Construction, in 4 life Trading (Pty) Ltd, Lotso Money Trading 119cc, Okay Construction cc and Tower of Prosperity (Pty) Ltd.

Try for yourself – click on each or any of the business names above or from the comprehensive list below to see if you can find them on MyPE. Then try your search on other search engines and social media sites.

Hint – MyPE has a handy function on all search pages that allows you to complete your search on these sites: Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Bing or Google – after you do a search on MyPE just click on each link to Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Bing or Google to continue your quest.

If you happen to be one of the businesses below and want to get a step ahead of your competition then list for free in the MyPE Business Directory AND White Pages. You could also ask us to set up a web site for you.

To the untrained eye the list of businesses above, certainly from the language used in naming them, appear to be a strong indicator of the effectiveness of BEE in levelling the playing field. One always wonders, though, just how many are shell companies being used for fronting or by municipal officials or councillors or family of officials with inside information and contacts.

One small way to help negate the above would be an insistence on the companies tendering having at least a registered web site domain – get your web site here.

I have to agree with you…..all pretty suspect to say the least. These days, reputable successful companies ensure they have a functional website. Why do these not have one? Why do these not have an online presence anywhere? Maybe another task for Thuli Madonsela!

Well done on voicing your concern re the possibilty that some of these companies are fronts, etc. However, the presence / non presence of a “functional website” has no relevence. In fact, there are thousands of excellent small businesses throughout S.A. who do not have a website.

Thanks for your input Kevin. Most of the above do not have a presence on social media either.

Well, I recognise about 25% of the names! Most of these are regular clients of ours at “the Office” (https://www.facebook.com/thepeoffice). We have been in business for the last 11 years, focussing on assisting new and previously disadvantaged entrepreneurs.
It is good to see so many of our clients finally get the recognition most of them have worked very hard for.
Yes, they do not have a presence on the internet because that is an expense most of them simply cannot afford – their profit margins are extremely small – unless your business is one of the “preferred” ones on the database. Government departments / municipalities do not surf the net to find suppliers – it is therefore highly unlikely that these companies will use the internet and social media soon.
Well done to all our valued clients who finally made it to the approval stage!

An expense that they could well continue avoid by doing one or all of these: List on MyPE for free: http://mype.co.za/new/pe/business-directory or open a social media account on Facebook or Twitter or LinkedIn or list with Google places.
