Colour me impressed by 0800 20 50 50

25 September 2016 By Alan Straton

The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality toll free Service Delivery, Water Services Operations Centre telephone number of 0800205050 was the focus of my attention on Saturday morning.

I spoke to a clearly switched on operator by the name of Jabu who quickly and efficiently gave me the information required in order to notify the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality that I had found and fixed a water leak on my property.

From that small interaction with Jabu I have to leap to the conclusion that not only is he an asset to the Metro but that he also made me prouder to be a citizen being served by someone exemplifying ‘Civil Service’.

One other thing that I learned from the call was that the Metro has caller ID which shows the operator the details of where the person is calling from – so call from the landline of where you are having a problem to assist in speedy identification.

A recent report – http://mype.co.za/new/42-of-water-lost-between-dam-and-tap/76066/2016/09 – stated that the Nelson Mandela Bay Metropole loses 42% of it’s water from Dam to Tap.

From personal experience with an elusive water leak I now have new empathy for the Municipality finding all those leaks from Dam to Tap.

The leak you see on our property above literally took us three months to find as we installed stop cocks along all lines, broke concrete, shouted at water users, gave up and returned and all the while couldn’t see any telltale signs of lush grass growing. We are situated on lots of rock so the water drains down instead of making it’s way to the surface.
