Call out to local crafters

The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality through the Red Location Art Gallery, NMB Tourism and Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Art Museum invite, all professional crafters living and working in Nelson Mandela Bay to submit craft products. We are challenging local experienced crafters to present their top products for selection for a craft market at the Donkin Reserve.

Entries will be accepted in all craft categories including locally produced attire, as well as homeware accessories (both traditional and contemporary), leatherwork, woodwork, beadwork, ceramics, recycled material, textiles, and any pioneering new mediums. We are looking for gifts for tourists, such as, jewellery, doeks, key-rings, ornaments, bags, aprons etc.

Crafters must present a display of their top craft products at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Art Museum at 1 Park Drive Central on 19 October 2023 for selection by craft and art experts. The selectors’ decision is final.

Entrants to the craft selection must arrive at 9:00. Tables will be made available for display. Participants will be given 15 minutes to setup up. The selection will take place between 9:30 and 15:30.

Crafters will be judged on the following criteria:

  1. Quality of workmanship
  2. Craft that represents the spirit of Nelson Mandela Bay
  3. Diversity of products
  4. Craft celebrating the Xhosa heritage and culture
  5. Craft celebrating our heritage and culture
  6. Craft must be innovative
  7. Readiness (crafters must demonstrate that they have enough products to fill the 3m x 2m exhibition stall)

Please note:

  • Large products will not be accepted due to limited space.
  • Entry forms will be available on the day of selection.
  • Crafters will need to attend a product development workshop before the craft market opens
