Exporter of the Year 2024 Winners

14 October 2024 by Guest Leave a Comment

It was a night of celebrations as exporting excellence in the region was celebrated at the Exporter of the Year Gala Banquet.

Exporters Eastern Cape’s 2024 Exporter of the Year Award winners were announced at the prestigious banquet, hosted at the Tramways Building on Friday, 11 October 2024.

“Tonight is a flagship event for Exporters Eastern Cape, one that we look forward to every year not only because it is a highlight on our social calendars, but also because it is a celebration of the culmination of another year of hard work and success by our members in the export industry in the Eastern Cape.”

“Recognising our members’ achievements is a privilege and testament to the partnerships we continue to forge locally and internationally. I have no doubt, after being chairman of Exporters Eastern Cape for 15 years, that we are a unique region with exceptional export businesses, and export support businesses, that are truly of the highest calibre,” said Exporters Eastern Cape Chairman Quintin Levey.

A highlight of the evening was the announcement of the Overall Winner of the 2024 Exporter of the Year Awards, which went to the first-time overall winner, ISUZU Motors South Africa.
ISUZU Vice President for Planning, Marketing and Corporate Affairs, Celestin Ndhlovu, said winning the award was very encouraging, especially looking at how tough the year had been and the hard work the team had put in, into a very competitive market.

“Our strategy has always been to grow the business through exports, and getting this kind of recognition means you’re doing something right. So going back into the business, I think it’s something that encourages everyone, because, you know, when you get incentivized in such a manner, then it shows that the kind of effort you are putting in, is yielding positive results,” said Ndhlovu.

In the year under review, the company had massively grown exports from the Eastern Cape into the rest of the African market, to 26 countries across the continent. In terms of volumes, they were the second highest South African exporter of vehicles (SUV, LCV, CV) into Africa, and the top Eastern Cape-based exporter of vehicles (SUV, LCV, CV) into Africa.

“We have seen our exports grow into Africa. If we look at our production, about 25 to 30% of our volume is exported into Africa, and we continue taking part in some of the discussions with policymakers to make sure that we are creating an enabling environment. So, discussions are something that we also encourage, especially looking at other players, because at the end of the day, if we can improve the kind of trade that happens in Africa, it’s going to be a huge opportunity for all,” said Ndhlovu.

While ISUZU had been a category winner before, it is the first time since the company was established in 2018, that they walked away with the coveted title of Overall Winner of the Exporter of the Year.

In addition to being announced the overall winner, ISUZU also achieved the following Exporters Eastern Cape 2024 accolades: Best Exporter: OEM – Winner. SJM Flex Environmental Award – Merit Award and the IDC Job Creator Award – Merit Award.

Standard Bank was the Platinum Sponsor for the awards evening, along with Gold Sponsors Volkswagen Group Africa and OM & Barker; Silver Sponsor Kingfisher FM; Bronze Sponsors ISUZU, IDC and SJM Flex. The official Media partner of the event was The Herald. The venue sponsor was the Eastern Cape Deveopment Corporation.

Thank you to DG Incentives for sponsoring the gifts for all the guests; BLG Logistics South Africa for sponsoring the main entertainment for the evening; BMW Nelson Mandela Bay for providing luxury vehicles transporting guests from the parking areas to the Tramways Building and Colin Carmody from The Alternative Board for sponsoring Business Coaching Sessions for all the Category Winners.

Accolades for Bridget Harpur

13 October 2024 by Guest Leave a Comment

Bridget Harpur, Head of Marketing for the Volkswagen Passenger Cars Brands, has been honoured with the coveted Marketing Leadership and Innovation Award at the Loeries held on 10 October 2024. This recognition marks another significant milestone in Harpur’s illustrious career and demonstrates her exceptional contributions to the Volkswagen brand and marketing in South Africa.

Bridget Harpur, a seasoned marketing professional with over two decades of experience, has demonstrated unparalleled expertise in brand development, campaign execution and team leadership. Her innovative approach to marketing has played a pivotal role in maintaining Volkswagen’s position as one of South Africa’s most awarded automotive brands for creative advertising.

Reflecting on her journey, Harpur shared: “My career started in 1998 in the advertising industry, where I held various roles across media, strategy, and account management. I worked on the Volkswagen account, and that’s where my love affair with the brand began. In 2009, I joined Volkswagen South Africa, working in marketing and sales, and then in our rental division, before returning to marketing three years ago. Our recent campaigns, such as The Blind Spot and VW Night School, have been passion projects for the team, driven by our commitment to road safety and our ability to make a difference in saving lives.”

Harpur’s work has not only made a profound impact on the South African audience but has also gained her significant industry recognition. Last year, she was named Marketer of the Year at the 2023 Assegai Awards, cementing her reputation as a leader in the competitive automotive sector. Harpur’s innovative marketing strategies continue to take the Volkswagen brand “Beyond the Drive,” making meaningful connections with consumers and driving the brand’s impact on and off the road.

Vicki Buys, Managing Director of Ogilvy South Africa, commented on the win: “Everyone across Ogilvy South Africa is ecstatic that Bridget has been recognised for her consistent belief in creative advertising that has helped drive the Volkswagen brand forward in SA. Having had the personal pleasure of working closely with Bridget for many years, I know that she’s not done yet!”

The Loeries’ Marketing Leadership and Innovation Award is given to individuals in recognition of their marketing achievements over an extended period. Notably, the first recipient of this award was former Volkswagen Group Africa’s Sales & Marketing Director, Mike Glendinning, in 2008.

Commenting on Harpur’s achievement, Glendinning said: “I’m so proud to see the Volkswagen brand continue to grow and the award come full circle. Congratulations to you, Bridget, for the incredible work you have done for the Volkswagen brand. Keep the magic rolling.”

Harpur’s relentless passion, creativity, and dedication have helped elevate the Volkswagen brand to new heights, making a lasting impact both within the automotive industry and beyond. Her visionary leadership has ensured that the Volkswagen brand remains one that captures the hearts of many South Africans.

Continental Tops Readers’ Poll in the Commercial Vehicle Tyres Category

13 October 2024 by Guest Leave a Comment

Continental has won the ETM Award 2024 “Best of New Transportation” in the renowned readers’ survey conducted by German publisher ETM among commercial vehicle professionals. In the “Tyres” category, readers of trade magazines “trans aktuell” and “Fernfahrer” and users of “eurotransport.de” handed the most votes to Continental’s product range. “This award provides a ringing endorsement both of the work carried out by our tyre developers and of our commitment to meeting the needs of our customers day in, day out,” said Timo Röbbel, Head of Marketing Replacement Tires Germany.

New award concept: spotlight on forward-looking products

The ETM readers’ poll – one of the largest such surveys in Germany – was given a revamp this year, and is now geared fully to recognizing future-focused products and solutions. “Our tyre developers consistently incorporate our customers’ requirements into their work. This means they are helping fleet operators to equip their vehicles with an eye to the future – and therefore to meet the highly exacting demands of the transport and logistics industry effectively over the long term. We are delighted that this approach is acknowledged and appreciated by users,” commented Röbbel at the IAA Transportation trade fair in Hanover. The ETM Award is seen as a benchmark for and bellwether of the commercial vehicle sector.

Far-reaching tyre services: maximizing the benefits for customers

As part of its Vision 2030 strategic program, Continental is focusing on a consistently customer-centric approach. “One of the keys to achieving this is our growing range of services to complement our products,” explained Timo Röbbel. The objective here is an entire ecosystem of comprehensive tyre services designed to enhance customer benefit – including digital tyre solutions that boost safety at the same time as lowering costs. “As a complete solution provider, Continental aims to offer customers excellent products and services – and, by extension, achieve a high level of customer satisfaction.”

Commercial vehicle tyres for sustainable transportation: circular economy is the goal

Continental is seeking to put in place a fully circular operating model for its tyre production by 2050 at the latest. “A circular economy aims to separate continued growth from the consumption of finite resources,” says Röbbel. “A circular process runs from design via the consumer’s purchase to recycling – and then back again.” In addition to renewable materials, the company is working systematically on using recycled raw materials. “We have set ourselves the goal of adopting recycled materials in the design, development and manufacture of premium tyres. The aim is to close the product and resources loops fully by 2050 at the latest.” This will mean 100 percent sustainably produced materials will be used in the production of new tyres.

New tyres, new standards: Generation 5 tyres from Continental

Continental is setting new standards with its practical and progressive tyre and maintenance concepts. The new, fifth-generation tyre line is geared squarely to the needs of customers in the transport sector and to the dynamic regulatory environment, which includes the EU Taxonomy, VECTO and European Green Deal. The completely newly developed truck tyres allow haulage companies to significantly reduce their fuel consumption and CO2 emissions in both regional and long-distance operations, and to cut costs. With the new generation of the Conti Eco, the tyre developers were able to resolve the conflicting goals of optimized rolling resistance and high mileage. “Our portfolio has kept growing over the years,” points out Timo Röbbel. “Our Conti360° digital solutions and our ContiLifeCycle concept help fleet managers to reduce their CO2 emissions and increase fleet efficiency. With the launch of Generation 5, we have set up our tyre portfolio for the challenges of the future.” And now these endeavors and successes have been recognized with the ETM Award 2024 “Best of New Transportation”.

A Call to Action for Breast Cancer Awareness Month 2024

11 October 2024 by Guest Leave a Comment

As we embark on Breast Cancer Awareness Month 2024, we must take a moment to honour the extraordinary courage and resilience of those who have faced this life-altering disease. Individuals like Ms. Thembeka Poswa, Programme Director for the Eastern Cape Department of Education infrastructure portfolio at the Coega Development Corporation (Coega) and a breast cancer survivor, remind us that the impact of this disease is profound and far-reaching not only for those diagnosed, but for families, communities, and society at large.

Ms. Poswa shares that navigating breast cancer is a complex journey, one that necessitates unwavering hope and collective determination. The moment a diagnosis is received, it marks the beginning of a challenging path that tests one’s character and resilience in unprecedented ways. The treatment process is not merely medical; it is an emotional expedition that can be both physically and mentally taxing, involving a spectrum of therapies and support systems.

To successfully navigate this journey, prompt action, access to comprehensive care networks, and sheer willpower are crucial. Each patient must rely on their inner strength, often uncovering extraordinary reservoirs of resilience. Hope and faith emerge as vital tools to combat the emotional and psychological toll of living with breast cancer, enabling individuals to maintain a positive outlook arguably the most significant survival tool of all.

The transformative power of a breast cancer diagnosis leads many survivors to reassess their lives. Priorities shift dramatically, often placing a renewed emphasis on family, health, and meaningful relationships. Self-care becomes essential, as individuals learn to live in the moment and nurture their emotional, physical, and spiritual wellbeing.

My own journey with breast cancer began in 2011, prompting a profound re-evaluation of my values. My treatment plan encompassed not only a mastectomy, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and hormone therapy but also a commitment to emotional, physical, and spiritual fitness. This holistic approach has made me a proud survivor.

This experience has reshaped my perspective on work-life balance. I have come to realise that self-care is critical not only for personal wellbeing but also for sustained professional success. Organisations have a vital role to play in fostering a supportive environment for affected employees and their families. At Coega, for instance, we actively promote breast cancer awareness and extend compassion and understanding through initiatives like our dedicated Wellness Centre and Employee Wellness Programme.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month serves as a poignant reminder of human resilience and hope, highlighting our capacity to overcome adversity and thrive. I have chosen to see beyond the diagnosis, and I encourage you to do the same.

Ultimately, breast cancer awareness is not confined to a single month; it represents an ongoing commitment to empowering individuals, families, and communities. As we strive for a future where breast cancer can be eradicated, the need for continued support in research, awareness, and access to quality care remains paramount. Together, we can foster a culture of resilience and hope that transcends the challenges posed by breast cancer.

Woodlands Dairy And Khazimla Project Empowers Young Women

10 October 2024 by Guest Leave a Comment

Woodlands Dairy recently made a significant contribution to the Khazimla Project, a non-profit organisation dedicated to empowering young women and restoring their dignity by addressing critical challenges such as access to menstrual hygiene products. Understanding the vital role that education plays in shaping futures, Woodlands Dairy donated sanitary towels to the project, directly benefiting the students of De Vos Malan Primary School.

Mandla Charlie, Assistant Brand Manager at Woodlands Dairy and First Choice, says: “This donation ensures that all Grade 6 and 7 girls at the school will have access to sanitary products for the next two months, allowing them to attend school regularly without the fear or stigma associated with inadequate menstrual hygiene. By supporting this initiative, Woodlands Dairy is helping to reduce absenteeism and empower these young girls, allowing them to focus on their education and future aspirations.”

Woodlands Dairy’s dedication to community well-being extends far beyond producing quality dairy products. “Through collaborations like the Khazimla Project, we are investing in the future of young women by providing essential resources that uphold dignity, boost self-esteem, and promote equal opportunities. This initiative aligns with our belief in the transformative power of education and its lasting, positive impact on society,” he concludes.

The Power of Branding for Aftermarket Automotive SMMEs

4 October 2024 by Guest Leave a Comment

In today’s competitive landscape, branding and marketing are no longer luxuries for large corporations. Small, medium, and micro enterprises (SMMEs) in the aftermarket automotive sector can benefit significantly from these strategic tools, writes Leah Bezuidenhout, Communications Officer at the Coega Development Corporation, who recently participated in a panel discussion on How to Build a Business Brand Image at the AIDC Eastern Cape Automotive Aftermarket Franchise Indaba, at the East London International Convention Centre.

Vehicles have become an indispensable part of modern life, offering convenience, mobility, and independence. As essential tools for transportation, cars enable people to commute to work, access essential services, and participate in social and economic activities. In many cultures, vehicles are also seen as symbols of status and success. Given their importance, customers naturally seek trustworthy and reliable service providers to ensure that their vehicles are in the best hands.

A strong brand is synonymous with trust and credibility. When customers recognise and trust a brand, they are more likely to choose its products or services. This is particularly important in the competitive aftermarket automotive sector, where quality, reliability, and expertise are highly valued.

To thrive in a competitive market, SMMEs must differentiate themselves with a unique value proposition. By identifying and highlighting their distinct features or benefits, businesses can attract customers who appreciate those qualities.

In the aftermarket automotive sector, customers may seek specialisation, reputation, or convenience. Brand positioning and strategic marketing can effectively convey these attributes using the most effective traditional and/or digital channels to reach a target audience.

A strong online presence is not only essential for reaching your target audience, but more importantly, attracting new customers. Establishing your business across various touchpoints also makes it easier for prospective customers to find, access and recommend your services.

Strong branding increases a business’s visibility and awareness, making it more likely to be considered by potential customers. A well-known and professional brand image establishes a stronger market presence, paving the way for expansion and growth.

Additionally, a strong brand can foster customer loyalty, leading to repeat business and referrals.

To effectively communicate their value proposition, SMMEs should focus on clear and concise brand messaging that is in line with their unique value proposition. This ensures that customers understand what the business offers and why they should choose it.

If your business values align with your personal values, adding a face or personal touch to your brand can also contribute to brand resonance and trust. This can be achieved through content marketing, such as videos and articles, to engage and connect directly with existing and future customers.

By investing in branding and marketing, aftermarket automotive SMMEs can build trust, differentiate themselves, acquire and retain customers, and establish a strong market presence. These strategies are essential for achieving long-term success in today’s competitive landscape.

Groundbreaking Coega Tank Farm Project Revealed

3 October 2024 by Guest Leave a Comment

Today, the MEC for Economic Development, Environmental Affairs and Tourism (DEDEAT), Honourable Nonkqubela Pieters, formally unveiled the Orion Engineered Carbons (Orion) Tank Farm Project in Zone 7 of the Coega Special Economic Zone (SEZ).

The event celebrated the successful completion of the Project, which broke ground in April 2022, and the launch of operations at the facility. “The unveiling also underscored the culmination of effective collaboration between the Coega Development Corporation (Coega), the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition (the dtic), the Eastern Cape Provincial Government, the Transnet National Ports Authority, and Orion, safeguarding jobs in the region’s automotive and tyre manufacturing industries,” said Mr. Themba Koza, Coega’s Acting Chief Executive Officer.

The automotive sector is a cornerstone of South Africa’s economy, and the Eastern Cape plays a pivotal role in its success. The region’s automotive industry contributes significantly to job creation, economic growth, and exports.

“Today, through this project, we are saving 7000 jobs in the region—jobs that would have otherwise been lost. This is a fulfilling moment for us, as the 7th administration is mandated to build an innovative and inclusive economy that creates jobs. As we coordinate our efforts to achieve this, we must also prevent job losses,” said MEC Pieters. “We have a keen interest in the automotive sector because it is both crucial and under threat, as evidenced by the recent announcement of potential layoffs at Mercedes-Benz. In this context, we are moving swiftly and proactively to foster a future-ready automotive sector, evidenced by the completion of the Provincial Electric Vehicle Strategy and the planned rollout of 11 charging stations, in addition to the two already operational.

Innovative solutions must become the norm in our approach,” concluded MEC Pieters.

In terms of the Project’s socio-economic impact, the construction of the facility enabled the creation of over 200 jobs and the appointment of six SMMEs, while further jobs will be created during operations. Funding by the dtic played a crucial role in preserving 120 jobs at the Orion plant.

Mr. Corning Painter, Orion CEO, commended the successful collaboration: “We are grateful for the successful collaboration and support from our partners in South Africa.

The Tank Farm enables Orion to continue operating as a critical link in the supply chain for the country’s tyre industry.”

The state-of-the-art Tank Farm enables the transportation of black feedstock oil from the Port of Ngqura for subsequent storage and utilisation in the production of carbon black, a crucial ingredient in the manufacture of tyres and various high-performance applications.

The facility is a strategic addition to the region’s industrial landscape, offering essential storage and handling capabilities. The Tank Farm boasts a total storage capacity of two 18,000 m3 tanks. Each tank compromises 80 shell plates, totalling 19,2 metres in height and weighing a total mass of 289 tons per tank. The facility is equipped with modern infrastructure, including a 5.4-kilometre pipeline from the Port of Ngqura to the facility. This cutting-edge technology ensures efficient operations and strict adherence to environmental regulations.

The opening of the OEC Tank Farm solidifies the Coega SEZ’s position as a leading investment destination in Africa. This strategic development enhances the region’s appeal for industrial development, providing essential services to existing and future businesses.

By supporting the automotive and tyre manufacturing industry, the OEC Tank Farm contributes to the sustainability and competitiveness of South Africa’s automotive sector.

Impact Of The Revised Fuel Transport Tariffs On Nelson Mandela Bay

2 October 2024 by Guest Leave a Comment

The Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber notes with extreme concern that revised transport tariffs have been implemented into the prices for petrol, diesel and paraffin price structures for the metro and surrounding areas as from today. This results in the area being unfairly subjected to new pricing tariffs where consumers and businesses will pay more for their fuel than what they should normally have been subjected to as part of a coastal region, says Chamber chief executive Denise van Huyssteen.

She says the accountability for the additional costs incurred for trucking fuel into the area after a berth at the Port Elizabeth Port was damaged in June, is unfairly being passed on to consumers and businesses in the Nelson Mandela Bay area.

“In practical terms on the price of 95 unleaded fuel, this means that consumers in the Bay received a 83 cents reduction instead of 114 cents, while those in Kariega were penalised even more with a 50 cents reduction and the Kirkwood area with a 45 cents reduction. In terms of diesel, the Bay received a 73 cents reduction, Kariega a 50 cents reduction and the Kirkwood area got a 45 cents reduction,” Van Huyssteen says.

It is important to note that on LPG gas the Bay received a 250 cents increase, Kariega got a 162 cents increase and Kirkwood a 149 cents increase.

“This unilateral and unjust decision does not take into account the fact that Nelson Mandela Bay is in recession and has among the highest unemployment rates in the country. Equally worrying, the accountability for the issue has simply been transferred to consumers and businesses who are already reeling from the consequences of the recent massive electricity price increases and other factors affecting the cost of living and the costs associated with operating businesses,” she says.

“While we understand that this pricing structure is of a temporary nature, and that once the berth is fixed the area will return back to its former allotted zone, this decision will still have a permanent effect and may potentially impact upon future fuel pricing adjustments.

“We are currently reviewing the matter and once we have a full understanding of the implications, we will consider the various options to determine our next steps in opposing this harsh and unfair decision.”
