Three Bay businesses named winners in Inaugural Business Ignition Challenge

1 November 2024 by Guest Leave a Comment

Three Nelson Mandela Bay businesses have emerged as winners in the inaugural Business Ignition Challenge, a collaboration between the Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber and Standard Bank. The challenge recognised exceptional small businesses across three categories: Township-based, Youth-owned, and those registered with the Chamber’s Entrepreneurship Desk.

A call for applications was released on 18 October 2024 and 14 Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) were shortlisted and subsequently presented to a panel of judges which included representatives from the Chamber and Standard Bank. Their pitches focused on the value proposition of each business and how grant funding would assist their growth and sustainability.

Events Crafted took the top spot in the Entrepreneurship Desk category, receiving a R70,000 grant to purchase essential event management equipment and cover six months of storage space rental. Additionally, an intern will be provided to enhance the company’s administrative capacity.

In the Township-based business category, Malitshe Designs, a home décor and furniture manufacturer specialising in African-inspired products, was awarded R40,000. This funding will help purchase machinery to reduce outsourcing costs.

Natually Nirvana, a youth-owned eco-friendly haircare brand founded by a third-year student at Nelson Mandela University, won the Youth-owned category and received R40,000 to buy a filling machine and expand its garden for increased production.

Chamber CEO Denise Van Huyssteen emphasised the important role entrepreneurs have to play in igniting the resurgence of the local economy.  She said that the Chamber launched the Entrepreneurship Desk before its other Bay of Opportunity initiatives, highlighting its belief in entrepreneurship in diversifying and growing the economy.
“It is clear that the Bay has so much potential but it is up to each of us to be proactive, take action and drive the future we want. Above all, think out of the box – don’t be afraid of experiment and rise to new challenges. As such, I am looking forward to see how you, the entrepreneurs, will actively shape and unlock the potential of the Bay of Opportunity,” she said.

Another winner was Zwide based Malitshe Designs, who clinched the township based business category and was awarded a grant of R40 000. The business is a home décor and furniture manufacturing company with key focus on creating African-inspired products that showcase the beauty of the African continent. The grant will go towards the purchase of machines to capacitate the business and eliminate costs associated with outsourcing.

Van Huyssteen further highlighted that each winning company will also receive a year of free Chamber membership and access to the Entrepreneurship Desk’s resources, while the other shortlisted businesses will benefit from mentorship and tailored support to address operational gaps.

The Desk currently supports over 300 businesses, of which 54% are female owned and almost 70% black owned. It is supported by its partners Borbet SA, MTN, Standard Bank and Engie.

Standard Bank’s Head of Enterprise in the Eastern Cape, Jonty Louw, said that “as a corporate partner with the Chamber, we recognise the challenges faced by MSME’s and constantly seek ways in supporting them to overcome these challenges. The collaborative efforts gave birth to the Business Ignition Challenge which provided MSME’s a platform to pitch their business to a panel of judges and how a grant fund will be a solution for their business needs. The grant funding is part of the Enterprise Development offering to MSME’s who meets the qualifying criteria.”

Coega Broadens Horizons for Hospitality and Dietetics Students

29 October 2024 by Guest Leave a Comment

The Coega Development Corporation (COEGA) recently hosted 35 students from the Nelson Mandela University (NMU) Departments of Human Nutrition and Dietetics, and Hospitality Management, for educational tours at the Coega Special Economic Zone (SEZ) and Bluewater Bay Sunrise Hotel, in Gqeberha.

The Human Nutrition and Dietetics students gained insight into cold storage and fruit packing at the KHOLD facility in Zone 1 of the Coega SEZ, while the Hospitality Management students explored kitchen management, food safety, and general operations at the 4-star Bluewater Bay Sunrise Hotel.

NMU Head of Department for Human Nutrition and Dietetics, Professor Annelie Gresse, said the aim of the tours was to expose students to the diverse career opportunities within the food and hospitality industries.

“These visits will inspire students to explore the diverse career paths available within the food and hospitality industries. It is important that students know they are not restricted to a specific type of job at a specific type of facility, but rather, that they can find a place to practice their skills in any sector. By exposing them to various sectors, we aim to broaden their horizons and empower them to make informed career choices,” said Gresse.

The tours provided students with a unique opportunity to apply their theoretical knowledge to real-world scenarios, enhancing their practical skills.

NMU Dietetics Student, Geraldine Matsevire, shared her excitement to learn more about the various industries within the Coega SEZ and Coega’s independent businesses, like the Bluewater Bay Sunrise Hotel.

“I’m excited to see the various work done by Coega and also to learn more about food safety and awareness,” said Matsevire.

By combining theoretical knowledge with practical exposure, Coega aims to empower the next generation of skilled professionals to make a lasting impact on their industry.

Bluewater Bay Sunrise Hotel General Manager, Ms. Sisonke Mapuma, shared that the hospitality industry, like many others, is premised on professionals’ willingness to serve.

“A successful hospitality industry is built on exceptional service. Aspiring professionals must understand that their interactions with customers, whether related to food or overall experience, can significantly impact a business’s reputation and bottom line. This is why practical, real-world experience is crucial for success in this field,” said Mapuma.

In conclusion, Coega reaffirms its commitment to fostering a skilled workforce and driving economic growth in the region. By providing valuable learning opportunities, Coega is contributing to the development of a skilled workforce in alignment with Sustainable Development Goal 4: Inclusive and Equitable Quality Education.

Coega Encourages Matric Class of 2024 to Strive for Excellence

24 October 2024 by Guest Leave a Comment

This week, South Africa’s Matric Class of 2024, including 94 learners from the Coega Maths and Science Programme (MSP), began their National Senior Certificate (NSC) examinations. The Coega Development Corporation (COEGA) extends best wishes to all matriculants and anticipates positive results for this year’s cohort of MSP learners.

Established in 2013, the Coega MSP is a catalytic Corporate Social Investment (CSI) initiative designed to help matriculants improve their Grade 12 Mathematics and Physical Science results. For the past 10 years, the programme has offered free classes to successful applicants, to improve their chances of university admission to pursue careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) fields.

Mr. Eldon September, Coega MSP Facilitator, shared his message of support for the Class of 2024 who are scheduled to write their examinations in early November 2024.

“As you embark on your final exams, remember that your hard work and dedication throughout the year have prepared you well. Stay focused, believe in yourselves, and draw strength from the knowledge and skills you have acquired through the programme. We are confident in your abilities and wish you all the best as you strive for academic excellence.

Our mission is rooted in the belief that education is a powerful catalyst for unlocking a world of opportunities. As facilitators, we strive to not only impart knowledge but to also inspire and motivate learners, guiding them towards a future where their aspirations are within reach,” said Mr. September.

The Coega MSP aims to bridge the gap between the supply and demand of critical but scarce STEM skills. By transforming young lives and providing hope to underprivileged learners, the programme contributes to enhancing academic achievement in line with Coega’s vision to be a leading catalyst for the championing of socio-economic development.

Current MSP learner, Hlumelo Fana (19) from Motherwell, expressed his feelings about his final exams, and his hopes for the future.

“I have a sense of calmness that has come from the progress I have made this year due to being a Coega Maths and Science Programme student, but I do have a bit of anxiety, which is normal, I guess. I am preparing to get distinctions for both subjects, as I achieved 96% for Mathematics and 90% for Physics in September. I am hoping to achieve these remarkable results even in my final exams, which seems realistic because of the knowledge and skills that I have learned throughout the year.

I have received so much support from the facilitators, not only academically but with hope and a fresh perspective on these two crucial subjects. I want to become a neurologist, and I would have to study medicine next year at Nelson Mandela University, ” he said. Coega MSP alumnus, Limpho Fadane (19), who successfully completed the Programme last year, shared words of encouragement with current MSP learners.

“I would like to extend my heartfelt best wishes to the Matric Class of 2024. Remember, it is possible to achieve great things with hard work and determination. Work hard, don’t lose hope, and this is a better opportunity to give it your all and strive for great results. I joined the Coega Maths and Science Programme with low marks, but through dedication and perseverance, I secured 86% in Mathematics and 77% in Physical Science. I am now pursuing Electronics Engineering at the University of KwaZulu-Natal.”

Coega remains steadfast in its dedication to nurturing the new generation of STEM professionals who will contribute to the growth and development of South Africa. To date, the Coega MSP has nurtured over 1000 future innovators and fostered educational excellence in STEM fields.

“Through our unwavering commitment and efforts, we are confident that we will once again achieve a remarkable 100% pass rate for the third consecutive year. This exceptional achievement underscores the exceptional outcomes of our Maths and Science Programme.

We wish the Matric Class of 2024 all the best in securing their desired tertiary courses and paving the way for successful careers,” concluded Mr. September.

Flooding in the Metro highlights significant infrastructure challenges

22 October 2024 by Guest Leave a Comment

Flooding has had a wide impact across the metro with communities in low-lying areas most severely impacted, while the continuity of business operations haves been impacted across most parts  of the Metro, says Denise van Huyssteen, the chief executive of the Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber.

This, the second flooding event in just four months, has highlighted the infrastructure maintenance challenges within the metro. “Our view is that a lot of the damage during flooding or heavy rains can be limited if stormwater drains are regularly cleaned and alien vegetation is removed from rivers,” she says.

The Markman area is reportedly the most impacted due to the area’s poor state of nfrastructure, while damage and disruptions were reported to business in areas such as Neave/Korsten, Perseverance, Baakens Valley, Kariega, Newtown Park and Deal Party.

Four businesses in North End and one in Deal Party have had their operations flooded, while 90% of manufactures in the Struandale area have not been able to operate due to a power outage which kicked in at 03h00 today. This is the second power outage in the area since Saturday and is unrelated to the floods.

According to 78 businesses polled by the Chamber across the metro, 81% have been affected by the floods with 62% reporting high absenteeism levels. A further 35% have reported that their facilities have been flooded, with Markman, Perseverance and Kariega being the hardest hit.

High absenteeism has been widely reported as a major issue across most businesses in the metro, with many manufacturers running limited operations or skipping shifts,” says Van Huyssteen.

She further elaborates that the taxi industry, which provides a vital service to thousands of commuters across the metro, was unable to access many flooded roads and thus transport employees to work.

The Chamber has opened up its premises as a drop-off point for supplies and is currently working with the Gift of the Givers to co-ordinate support for disaster relief efforts for those who have been affected.

So far, community organisations such as the Community Chest and Rotary Club have stepped in to support with various items. Intertown Transport has availed its fleet to provide transportation of donated supplies from across the country to Nelson Mandela Bay at their own cost, while their operations are also serving as collection points.

Van Huyssteen says that some of the emergency supplies required include toiletries, baby care products, blankets and non-perishable food.
