Gqeberha, South Africa, 12 September 2023 – As a function that is central to the achievement of clean audit findings, effective records management ensures the responsible handling and retrieval of vital information for verification purposes. As a standard practice, the Coega Development Corporation (Coega), recently, welcomed the Department of Rural Development and Agrarian Reform (DRDAR) for a benchmarking visit aimed at studying Coega’s record management and processes, to identify areas of improvement for the department.

According to Ms. Gqigqi Dotwana, the Deputy Director for Records Management at the Department of Rural Development and Agrarian Reform: “Cultivating a culture of effective record management is the bedrock of progress, and visiting Coega was a step toward nurturing this foundation. We aimed to learn from Coega’s meticulous processes, so we may harvest knowledge to enhance our own department’s commitment to responsible record keeping.”

Mr. Premier Masango, Coega Records Management Officer, underlines the significance of the organisation’s records management process and guidelines: “Efficient document and record management is the backbone of our organisation’s success. These practices strengthen Coega’s ability to make informed decisions, enhance operational efficiency, and drive growth. By maintaining a structured and standardised system for documenting and managing information, Coega not only achieves clean audit findings but also fosters a culture of accountability, innovation, and continuous improvement.

“These guidelines provide a solid foundation for mitigating risks associated with data breaches, loss of critical information, and regulatory non-compliance. Benchmarking provides a comparative analysis of how successful entities handle their information assets, enabling organisations to make better informed decisions. Regular evaluations of document and record management practices empower Coega to identify opportunities for innovation and advancement, ensuring long- term sustainability and success, and adaptability to evolving technologies, industry trends, and regulatory requirements.

Benchmarking enables Coega to implement robust security measures, reducing the likelihood of data breaches and protecting sensitive information. Coega is committed to upholding best practices as an International Organisation Standardization (ISO) certified organisation, fostering confidence among investors, clients, and government agencies, and ultimately, ensuring overall organisational success.

Kariega – Small and medium enterprises (SME) are described as the engine of an economy. According to the World Bank, SMEs represent 90% of businesses and accounts for more than 50% of employment worldwide.

However, small businesses often encounter challenges which impede growth or they fail due to the lack of business management expertise, cash flow issues, access to markets, and a number of other factors.

To this end, Volkswagen Group South Africa (VWSA) established the Volkswagen Business Support Centre in Kariega, in collaboration with Raizcorp, to develop the entrepreneurial ability, resilience and business acumen of entrepreneurs who run small businesses in Nelson Mandela Bay.

Since its inception in 2011, many entrepreneurs who have participated in the programme have attained business success. To date, the centre has developed 137 businesses, generating a collective turnover of R640 million in the Eastern Cape, with an average turnover growth rate of 61%. An additional 604 new jobs have been created during this time, and 1 608 people were employed by these businesses while on the programme. Furthermore, 3 866 walk-in visitors from the community have received business advice since August 2015.

VWSA Corporate and Government Affairs Director, Nonkqubela Maliza, says small and medium enterprises (SMEs) are an essential vehicle to address the challenges of unemployment, economic growth, and perhaps most importantly, equitable distribution of income among South African citizens from all walks of life. “The Volkswagen Business Support Centre was established to encourage small business success and create employment,” said Maliza.

The latest cohort of entrepreneurs recently graduated after following a rigorous three-year programme. The graduates successfully completed the Business Commercialisation Programme, the Comprehensive Enterprise Development Programme and the Supply Chain Support Programme for Levels P, M and E.

Guest speaker at the graduation ceremony, Sanda Mntundini, who graduated in 2017, said the Volkswagen Business Support Centre changed his life and contributed to the success of his transportation business. “After my business reached a low point and landed me in significant debt, I joined the Volkswagen Business Support Centre’s entrepreneurship programme. I acquired new skills which helped to attract new clients and my business has since grown by 40%,” said Mntundini.

Guy Taylor, Raizcorp Prosperator Manager, commended the graduates for persevering. “The programme is intensive and demanding, but the participants showed tenacity to continue. Now they are reaping the rewards of their labour,” he said.

The Volkswagen Business Support Centre invites small to medium businesses that need support to apply online on www.raizcorp.com.

The event formed part of Women’s Month activities, in line with this year’s theme of “Accelerating Socio-economic Opportunities for Women Empowerment.” This Expo follows Coega’s prestigious award of excellence in the Skills Education and Training category at the African Business Awards, in Sandton, north of Johannesburg on 17 August 2023.

Business and Government need to work together to change South Africa, says BLSA CEO

1 September 2023 by Guest Leave a Comment

Business and government need to work together to address some of the urgent challenges facing South Africa to spur the country towards a sustainable growth path, says Busisiwe Mavuso, the CEO of Business Leadership South Africa.

Mavuso delivered her keynote address at the Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber’s Annual Ladies Breakfast event today where she highlighted that she was encouraged by the current partnership pledge between business and the government, which is driven by over 100 CEOs from some of the country’s top companies.

“We are now seeing business stepping up to play a more meaningful societal leadership role to build a more positive national narrative. This initiative, whose commitment, stature and ability to marshal resources, would increase the country’s probability of success. As such, we have set up multiple operational and governance layers to ensure that the implementation of this is done in a structured way,” she says.

“Government may not have the fiscal muscle to lean against the energy crisis, it however does have the policy tools to deal with it. The recent delays that came to light regarding the processing of the Electricity Regulation Act Amendment Bill, were rather disappointing. The bill is an urgent piece of legislation that is central to the joint efforts of business and government to solve the electricity crisis. It will allow for the creation of a Transmission System Operator to manage the national grid and procure electricity from a competitive market. For business to continue investing its resources and energy into partnering with government to resolve this crisis, government needs to focus on getting the policy environment right.

She further emphasised the need to improve the local operating environment for investors and business as it has deteriorated to its weakest level in years.

Delivering her welcome address, NMBBC Chamber chief executive Denise van Huyssteen also highlighted that over the past two years, local businesses have been actively embracing the opportunity to collaborate with government to get the city working again. Our primary focus has been on finding and implementing innovative solutions in order to save much needed investment and jobs in Nelson Mandela Bay.

These out of the box solutions have ranged from the adoption of sub-stations, schools and leaks to the roll-out of a 24 hour stage 5+ schedule to mitigate against the risks of loadshedding through to the establishment of seven geographic clusters around the Bay and the roll out of a renewable energy cluster.

“As we refine these solutions, we now need to move to the next phase which must be to ensure the sustainability of what we are all doing as a collective. I have particularly been encouraged by how many business volunteers have stepped up to offer their time and resources for the greater good of our local economy,” Van Huyssteen says.

“An important foundation for the collaboration between business and the Municipality has been Council’s approval of the Adopt A Sub-Station and Broader Master MOU, which has enabled vital action to take place.

“While we still have a long way to go – there is a way forward and I believe it is still possible to get our city working again, especially when you consider that Nelson Mandela Bay is more contained and therefore a more manageable city than most others in the country. As a business community and network of stakeholders, we are all connected to one another and must use this as leverage to drive positive action.”

She further encouraged all the women who attended this year’s event, and also the biggest one to date with 460 attendees, to utilise their strengths to lead the way forward by getting involved, wherever they can make a difference in the Metro.

“Every action helps, no matter how big or small.”

How and Why You Need to Insure Your Solar Panels

1 September 2023 by Guest Leave a Comment

PSG Financial Services answer the question; “Solar panels: what are the short-term insurance considerations?”

Before considering solar installation at your residence or business, we recommend you seek the advice of an accredited specialist solar PV systems provider. These specialist providers are well qualified and acquainted with the various laws and regulations that govern solar system installations and will be able to do a proper assessment of the exact requirements of your individual residence or business. Ensure you get the right advice when installing a solar system, as the process can become quite complicated without the help of a reputable accredited installer.

Obtain proof that the accredited appointed installer has evaluated the suitability of the roof to carry the additional weight of the solar system to be installed: A pre-installation inspection is crucial to ensure that the building’s roof structure and all rafters are not compromised or damaged in any way for the solar panel and system installation to continue.

The specialist provider should be able to advise you of any potential issues that may compromise the installation and functioning of the solar system prior to the installation: Ensure that the approved installer has the necessary insurance policies in place, should damage to your building occur during the installation process. An example of such a policy is a so-called ‘Contractors All Risk Insurance policy’. Upon request, the installer must provide proof of such a policy to you.

Obtain a signed-off electrical installation certificate of compliance (CoC) confirming that your installer has complied with the code of practice for the wiring of the premises: It is essential to obtain a certificate of compliance (CoC) when installing solar power systems, as this is a legal requirement as well as a requirement for the registration of the solar power system with your relevant municipality.

Perform a due diligence on your selected installer: To avoid risks such as fire and explosion brought on by a non-compliant or sub-standard installation, it is important that you conduct thorough research on your chosen installer to confirm their expertise and compliance with regulations. Verify installer registration by checking the Electrical Conformance Board to ensure your preferred installer is registered and compliant.

Update your insurance policy to insure the installed system: Solar or any other energy solution systems are valuable assets to be insured. Keep in mind that certain documents as indicated will be required during the insurance application process.

Contact your PSG Adviser/Insurance Broker if you upgraded your property with a solar or any alternative energy solution system, to obtain advice on whether you only need to increase your building insurance sum insured, or need to take out any alternative cover that better suits your individual needs.
