WSU BSc Environmental Science students visit Coega SEZ.

6 October 2023 by Guest Leave a Comment

Gqeberha, South Africa, 6 October 2023 – This week, the Coega Development Corporation (Coega) welcomed 44 second and third-year BSc Environmental Sciences students from Walter Sisulu University (WSU) for an educational tour of the Coega Special Economic Zone (SEZ). The visit marked the second of its kind for WSU in the last two years.

The core objective of the visit was to bridge the gap between the students’ theoretical understanding and real-world applications, thereby offering students exposure to the field and equipping their minds through education, training, and skills development to nurture the growth of talented young experts. The tour covered diverse aspects such as water quality management, waste management, noise monitoring, open space management, wind power generation, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technology, and the execution of Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs). In addition, the visit comprised an overview of the Coega SEZ’s operations, along with a detailed explanation of the services offered by the Sustainability Business Unit (SBU), which incorporates those related to health and safety, environmental management, quality management, and climate change response management.

According to Mr. Sisa Xabanisa, Coega Environmental Manager: “Coega is committed to shaping students with educational tours that provide invaluable insights and exposure to the real world and business. This exposure is crucial in helping learners grasp the complexities and intricacies of their chosen field, and the insights and experiences would cultivate a deep passion for lifelong learning. Coega’s dedication to this educational approach not only benefits the learners but also contributes to the nurturing of a future generation of well-prepared, highly skilled professionals who will play vital roles in environmental sciences and other disciplines.”

Coega strives to continue providing students with unparalleled opportunities to expand their knowledge and broaden their horizons, and thus empowers them to make informed career choices for success in the ever-evolving world of academia and industry.

Nompilo Chabangu, a representative among the students, expressed her perspective on the visit: “It has been a very informative and educational experience for us. I firmly believe that no one can depart from the doors of Coega without having learned something new. I found the monitoring of water quality particularly intriguing. We observed how water quality is regularly monitored and gained insights into instances where water quality surpassed expected standards, which was very interesting for me.”

“Throughout the years of bringing our students here, Coega consistently exceeds our expectations. This experience proves highly beneficial for both our institution and our students, offering them valuable exposure. I am particularly delighted with the enthusiastic participation of our students. Their active engagement with the presentations demonstrates their eagerness to learn and gain valuable insights from this visit,” said Mr. Anele Ntshanga, WSU Lecturer for Safety Health, Quality and Soil Sciences.

Coega’s unwavering dedication to learning and education ensures that the next generation of leaders and thinkers are well-prepared and inspired to make a positive impact on the world.

Coega Geared Up for the Eastern Cape Investment Conference 2023

27 September 2023 by Guest Leave a Comment

Gqeberha, South Africa, 27 September 2023 – With a few days to go before the commencement of the Annual Eastern Cape Investment Conference at the East London International Convention Centre on 29 September, the Coega Development Corporation (Coega) looks forward to being a part of the Conference to share progress achieved within the first six months of this year.

Since April 2023, Coega has announced five (5) new investors set to take up space in the safe and secure 9003-hectare Special Economic Zone (SEZ), with a combined investment value pledged of R385m (Q1/2023/24FY) and 384 expected jobs. This is in addition to further investment pledges made at the South African Investment Conference earlier this year. Investments announced since April 2023, include, amongst others, MEC Commercial Trailers, with an estimated investment value pledged of R370 million, expected to create approximately 150 operational jobs and 200 construction jobs; Atlantic Glass, with an estimated investment value pledged of R13 million, and expected to create 20 operational jobs; and Romark Logistics, with a R2.2 million investment value pledged, and expected to create 14 operational jobs. This month, Coega welcomed the announcement of a R3bn investment by the Stellantis Group for a CKD automotive manufacturing plant in the Coega SEZ. Direct employment to support the first capacity step is expected at 1 000 jobs, with around 2 097 jobs anticipated for the Eastern Cape (EC) Province. The Stellantis investment will make the EC Province home to five global automotive manufacturers.

“These secured investments are a story of good progress and testament to the attractiveness of the Coega brand in global markets, its good reputation and the competitiveness of its SEZ, that is an investment destination of choice amongst local and global corporations; and it already hosts several global and regional brands across various sectors,” says Mr. Thandile Jack, Coega Senior Business Development Manager.

Based on feedback from the 2021 Coega SEZ Investor Satisfaction Survey, 86% of respondents indicated their satisfaction with the Coega SEZ as their investment destination, while 91.6% would recommend the Coega SEZ as an ideal business location to other businesses, and 91,7% indicated that their business key performance indicators have improved since locating at the Coega SEZ. The recent investor survey published by Statistics South Africa (Coega SEZ Census Report), indicated that Coega SEZ investors generated a collective income of R14,3 billion. The total income reflected an annualised increase of 9,0% compared to the income reported in the corresponding survey of 2018 (R11,0 billion).

“With new investments spanning the automotive, energy, manufacturing, and logistics sectors, the Coega SEZ is the continent’s example of what fit-for-purpose locations, synergistic planning, and a client-centric approach to business can achieve,” added Jack.

In a bid to attract further investment, Coega also recently formed part of a delegation accompanying the EC Premier, Honourable Oscar Mabuyane, on an official visit to Tunisia where MOUs and partnership agreements were signed between the EC Province and Tunisia.

Since inception, Coega has played a pivotal role in driving inclusive growth and socio-economic transformation, not only in South Africa, but also across the African continent in areas where the organisation operates. One of Coega’s most remarkable achievements has been its role in the creation of employment opportunities. Last year (2022/23 financial year), Coega generated 15,222 direct and indirect jobs, empowering individuals, and communities alike. By harnessing its regional strength in terms of strategic location and existing industrial activity, Coega has not only stimulated inclusive economic growth but has also nurtured a skilled workforce to foster inclusive development. Coega has become a beacon of hope and a catalyst for change.

The organisation looks forward to the Eastern Cape Investment Conference 2023 as a crucial platform to attract and facilitate foreign and domestic investments, and what the next six months have in store for advancing economic growth and development.

Renewed calls from Chamber’s CCC following devastating storm surges in Coastal areas

20 September 2023 by Guest Leave a Comment

The Nelson Mandela Bay Climate Change Coalition has made renewed calls for coastal municipalities to build a rapid-response system to extreme weather events and to ensure that climate change modelling is integral to city infrastructure development and maintenance planning following the “perfect storm” events of the past weekend. The combination of a passing “deep low” pressure system and its resultant gale force winds with a high spring gave rise to significant storm surges and caused the loss of life and significant damage to buildings and infrastructure along the coastal areas of the Western Cape, Eastern Cape and KwaZulu Natal. The 100 km/h plus winds and nine metre plus waves has also reshaped significant parts of coastal beach zones.

Dr Andrew Muir
Dr Andrew Muir

Dr Andrew Muir, who chairs the NMB Climate Coalition and is also the CEO of the Wilderness Foundation Africa, said that the storms should serve as a clarion call for Nelson Mandela Bay to accelerate efforts to ensure that the metro has up-to-date disaster management planning and response systems in place, the necessary resources to deal with disaster events in both the short-term and long-term, and importantly plans for a future with a different climate.

He said while the perfect storm itself is not directly caused by climate change, what can be expected is that the intensity and frequency of such storms will increase significantly. Climate change will also amplify other peak weather events, giving rise to “rain bombs” (eThekwini April 2022), “fire storms” (Canada wild fires 2023), and increase the regularity of the weekend’s perfect storm. Long-term impacts on Nelson Mandela Bay will include drier and windier conditions accompanied by sea-level rise.

“The weekend’s storm underscores the critical need for local authorities and relevant stakeholders to invest in the maintenance and improvement of infrastructure systems, such as increasing vegetated dunes as soft-engineering solutions, ensuring coastal management lines are enforced, and the importance of maintaining stormwater drainage. While extreme weather events cannot be prevented, there are significant proactive actions that can be taken to better withstand such events and protect communities from the associated risks and damages,” said Mr Muir.

As an example, the deteriorating state of the metro’s drainage system is a significant threat, as it plays a crucial role in managing excess water run-off during heavy rainfall and storms. Neglecting its maintenance can lean to flooding, property damage, and pose risks to public safety.

In the regions prone to extreme weather events like low-lying coastal areas, maintaining and upgrading infrastructure is essential for disaster mitigation and resilience. As such, it is crucial for the Metro to take these concerns seriously and allocate the necessary resources to address all the identified infrastructure challenges promptly.

Last year, Dr Muir led a study to assess how climate change will impact Nelson Mandela Bay. The study provides an outlook from 2021-2040, and highlights the impact that extreme storm surges, rising sea levels and temperature increases will have on the Metro. The predicted storm surges would cause severe damage to key infrastructure such as roads and buildings, and communities living in low-lying areas, would be particularly vulnerable.

Kariega – For more than 70 years Volkswagen vehicles have traversed the roads of South Africa and have become one of the most loved vehicle brands in the country.

Its heritage remains proudly preserved at the Volkswagen AutoPavilion in Kariega. This quaint town, formally known as Uitenhage, is the second oldest town in the Eastern Cape and is home to Volkswagen Group South Africa’s (VWSA) manufacturing plant where the first Volkswagen Beetle rolled off the production line at the end of August 1951.

More than 40 classics are displayed inside the AutoPavilion museum amongst which the oldest is a 1938 DKW F5 Reichklasse.

The Volkswagen AutoPavilion is open to the public and offers plant tours where visitors have the opportunity to experience the production of two of South Africa’s most popular vehicles, the Polo and the Polo Vivo.

Open five days a week, the Volkswagen AutoPavilion has welcomed more than 14 000 visitors this year (as at the end of August).

Andile Dlamini, Head of VWSA Communications, said visitors come from across the country to view the museum and to experience the motoring entertainment on offer at the AutoPavilion.

“The museum is dedicated to preserving and showcasing an impressive array of our classic and iconic cars which were assembled at our Kariega plant in the past seven decades. Many young children and school groups visit our facility to learn about the evolution of the automotive industry,” said Dlamini.

He added that visitors to the AutoPavilion also gain insight into the craftsmanship and engineering behind these remarkable vehicles and learn about the contribution of Volkswagen to the local automotive industry.

Aligned to Coega’s commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals 13 (Climate Action) and 14 (Life Below Water), Paris Agreement on climate change, and in commemoration of International Coastal Clean Up Day on 16 September, the Coega SEZ Coastal Clean Up aims to raise awareness about the growing challenge of pollution on beaches and encourage behaviour change.

The Coega SEZ Coastal Clean Up aims to safeguard marine environments against land pollution, raise awareness about the growing problem of increased pollution levels on beaches, and encourage change in behavioural patterns that negatively affect the beach and marine environments. Targeted litter items on the day included plastic, metal, glass, paper, unrecyclables, and any other debris that may cause harm to land and ocean species.

According to Sisa Xabanisa, Coega Environmental Manager, “Hosting International Coastal Clean-up Day aligns with our belief that unity is the driving force behind meaningful and sustainable change. By bringing the Coega community and stakeholders together, along with the rest of the world, to commemorate the cause, we aim to champion change through unity. Hopefully, our collective efforts reflect our unwavering commitment to safeguarding marine environments for future generations. Plastic pollution is a massive problem for our coastal environments, and every small action to clean up is a big step towards making a difference.”

Coastal clean up efforts contribute to the preservation of both marine and terrestrial life by removing litter and pollutants from beaches and coastlines, reducing the presence of toxic chemicals, creating a safer coastal environment, and ensuring the safe disposal of collected litter.

Dr. Stacy Webb, Executive Director at Sustainable Seas Trust, says: “Our partnership with Coega is aligned with our goal of growing a network to create awareness and facilitate best practices around the conservation of our seas, and the management of the waste that flows into them. Together, we can create a future where Africa’s people and Africa’s seas flourish together.”

The Coega SEZ Coastal Clean Up stands as a testament to Coega’s fundamental value of sustainability and helps prevent the contamination of critical habitats, such as mangroves and wetlands, which are essential for biodiversity and the wellbeing of land and marine species. Ultimately, these collective actions work together to ensure the sustainable coexistence of life on land and in our oceans.

Ms. Mareleze DuRandt, Coega Human Capital Solutions Administration Coordinator, shares insight on her participation: “At Coega, we recognise the importance of corporate social responsibility and environmental stewardship. By actively participating, we aspire to demonstrate our commitment to a cleaner, healthier environment. It’s about taking proactive steps toward a sustainable future.”

As the developer and operator of a preferred and competitive investment destination, and a leading SEZ in Africa, Coega is committed to fostering a harmonious coexistence with the natural environment, as a leading catalyst for the championing of socio-economic development.

Collaboration to Save Investment and Jobs

14 September 2023 by Guest Leave a Comment

“The partnership between the Nelson Mandela Municipality’s Electricity Directorate and the Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber continues to deliver innovative solutions to help mitigate against the risks of loadshedding on large manufacturers.”

NMBBC
Chamber CEO Denise van Huyssteen with NMBM’s Executive Director for Electricity and Energy Luvuyo Magalela.

Chamber CEO Denise van Huyssteen, said that if it were not for the implementation of the 24 hour stage 5+ loadshedding schedule for qualifying industry, due to the extreme and sustained loadshedding over the past few months, a number of manufacturers may have closed their doors by now. “We regard this intervention as critical in saving investment and jobs in Nelson Mandela Bay.”

Currently 39 major manufacturing companies participate in the 24 hour schedule, which enables a less disruptive approach to loadshedding. “The companies volunteer to load-shed for 24 hours in a row and then operate for a couple of days in a row, depending on the level of loadshedding.”

The manufacturers who are currently on the 24 hour schedule have to meet certain eligibility criteria such as having a clean feed in place from the sub-station to their manufacturing operations, using a minimum of 0.7MW of electricity and must be registered on the ECWIN system used by the Municipality to ensure compliance to the schedule is monitored.

“We commend the Electricity Directorate on their openness to partner with business in working together to save investment and jobs in Nelson Mandela Bay,” she emphasised. “We value this relationship and look forward to continuing to work with them to find ways to support more businesses to find more tenable solutions to deal with loadshedding. Equally important it is vital that this collaboration is also directed at finding ways to urgently rein in electricity inefficiencies and losses, so as to ensure the medium to long-term sustainability of the Municipality.”

Van Huyssteen said that the Chamber was committed to continuing to work with the Electricity Directorate to find solutions to a range of other issues such as improving efficiencies, preventing electricity losses and outages and supporting additional power generation opportunities. “An important intervention in place is Adopt A Sub-Station, which enables Chamber members to extend their private security to surrounding sub-stations so as prevent cable theft and the vandalism of sub-stations. To date 20 sub-stations have been adopted by our members and so far, this has proven to be effective.”

The Chamber’s Renewable Energy Cluster, has attracted the interest of more than 20 companies, which combined account for 20% of the metro’s electricity consumption. Together they represent a consolidated customer base for a renewable energy power producer which will install well over 200 MW of power generation,” she emphasised. “There is scope for additional businesses to join at a later stage. Given that new energy generation capacity is being created, this project will have a positive influence on mitigating load shedding in the medium term. We value the Electricity Directorate’s support of this initiative and for

having embraced the concept of Wheeling to allow end users to procure IPP power through approved traders. There is opportunity for the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Municipality to become a municipality of choice for IPPs and traders.”

Woodlands Dairy Commits To Planting Trees In Celebration Of Arbour Week

14 September 2023 by Guest Leave a Comment

Woodlands Dairy, a prominent advocate for sustainability, has eagerly responded to the Department of Forestry, Fisheries, and the Environment’s appeal, by pledging to plant an additional 350 trees in celebration of Arbour Week, observed earlier this month.

Arbour Day was first introduced to South Africa in 1982. South Africans loved the concept so much that what initially began as a solitary Arbour Day has now flourished into an all-encompassing Arbour Week, commemorated during the first week of September annually.

André Adendorff, Sustainability Manager at Woodlands Dairy, says, “By the close of 2019, we had successfully introduced approximately 100 Cape Ash trees alongside the western boundary of Woodlands Dairy. Our ongoing initiative involves planting an additional 200 trees along Felix Street, positioned on the landward side of the road in Humansdorp.

“As part of Arbour Week, our intention is to also establish around 150 Coral trees along the R330, stretching from the N2 entrance into Humansdorp, during the month of September,” he elaborates.

The planting of these trees will be a collaborative effort between Woodlands Dairy and the local municipality. “Community members will be employed to plant these trees which contribute to the overall objectives of the Department of Forestry, Fisheries, and the Environment and their objective of planting a million trees per year,” says Adendorff. He underscores that the primary purpose of tree planting is twofold: firstly, to enhance the verdant appeal of public spaces for the community’s benefit, and secondly, to restore natural areas following the removal of invasive species, thereby reestablishing habitats for various wildlife, including birds, amphibians, insects, and other creatures.

Adendorff further clarifies that the introduction of carbon tax by the national government in May 2013 served as a pivotal measure to curbing South Africa’s greenhouse gas emissions. He notes, “This policy impelled Woodlands Dairy to invest in cleaner technologies and minimise emissions as much as possible. In addition to transitioning away from carbon-intensive energy sources, the process involved offsetting emissions through the implementation of carbon reduction initiatives. Opting to plant trees was a logical decision, as trees possess the capacity—through photosynthesis—to convert carbon dioxide into oxygen. The first 100 trees were planted on the Woodlands premises by the close of 2019.”

Woodlands Dairy is deeply committed to adopting numerous sustainable practices with the aim of minimising their ecological impact. This encompasses the strategic utilisation of renewable energy sources such as solar photovoltaics, biogas, and biomass for the generation of electricity and steam to power their operations. In elucidating this approach, Adendorff explains, “Our adoption of these energy sources is motivated by the desire to lessen our reliance on fossil fuels like coal-powered electricity and the usage of heavy furnace oil (HFO) for steam generation. This shift significantly diminishes our overall environmental footprint.”

Adendorff concludes by emphasising, “We make a concerted effort to extensively communicate all our initiatives, fostering community awareness and inspiring collective action. Our collaboration with Tetra Pak in our recycling endeavours underscores the incorporation of renewable materials, notably wooden packaging, highlighting the importance of renewable plant-based resources such as trees.”

Stellantis Invests R3 Billion in South Africa, Establishing State-of-the-Art Automotive Plant in Coega

13 September 2023 by Guest Leave a Comment

Stellantis has confirmed its intention to develop a greenfield manufacturing facility in Coega in South Africa with the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) and the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition (the dtic). Minister Ebrahim Patel, senior officials from the IDC and Mr. Samir Cherfan, Stellantis Middle East and Africa Chief Operating Officer met at the Parliament Buildings in Cape Town to agree on investment in the South African motor industry.

“It is a wonderful day for all South Africans when a global company of Stellantis’ proportions decides to expand its manufacturing footprint in South Africa, to assemble completely knocked down units,” said Mr. Ebrahim Patel, Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition. “South Africa currently has the capacity to produce close to 700 000 vehicles annually. This will add considerable additional capacity, just as we prepare to implement the African Continental Free Trade Area. The country remains a great investment destination and this commitment from Stellantis to invest in our local motor industry highlights the success of our manufacturing sector policy, its capability and potential. We look forward to welcoming Stellantis to South Africa and sharing in the detailed plan for employment and investment”.

“We are delighted with the speed at which we are progressing on this project, thanks to the commitment of Minister Patel and the great collaboration with IDC, CDC and dtic teams,” commented Samir Cherfan-Chief Operating Officer Stellantis Middle East and Africa. “This project reflects our focus and trust in South Africa as one of the most important markets in Africa & Middle East. It is also the execution of our Dare Forward 2030 Strategy to reach over 22% Market Share in the region by 2030 with 70% regional localization of our sales leading to over 1 million units produced. We believe in South Africa and we intend to develop industrially and commercially bringing value to our customers”.

The manufacturing plant will be built in the South African Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in Coega situated near Gqeberha in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa. The greenfield manufacturing project is planned to complete by the end of 2025. The first launch planned early 2026 is a 1 T pick-up truck with volumes expected to reach up to 50,000 completely knocked down (CKD’s) units annually including export, in line with the industry masterplan, known as the Automotive Production Development Program (APDP). The plant will be predisposed in terms of space and painting to go up to 90K units / year.

Direct employment to support the first capacity step is expected at 1000 jobs. Stellantis will be massively investing in over 500 000 hours in training and skills to develop and support the local teams to the level of global standards. We are targeting a localization rate over 30%.

“The Coega Development Corporation (CDC) is enthralled for Stellantis to have chosen the proposed site in Coega for their Southern African manufacturing operations. Joining other major manufacturers in the area makes the Coega region the primary automotive hub in the country. The investment in the plant, employment, training and skills transfer will certainly benefit the region tremendously. “This is a much needed and welcomed economic boost for the Eastern Cape Province with an anticipated economy wide impact on the province’s GDP of R 664 million. Household income is anticipated to increase to R558.4 million within the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality (NMBM) and R577.4 million for the entire Province. Most importantly, an anticipated 1800 jobs will be created in the Metro and around 2 097 for the EC Province,” said Khwezi Tiya, CEO the CDC.

Stellantis continues to work closely with the IDC in developing a viable joint venture (JV) partnership that will be evaluated by appropriate credit committees. “Stellantis’ success with similar manufacturing plants around the world is well-known and our planned JV with Stellantis to build another greenfield plant in South Africa is progressing well. The investment is in line with IDC’s intent to drive investment that supports the development of the regional automobile value chain,” said Mr. TP Nchocho, CEO of the IDC.
