Dear GQ Business – Follow the Governments Lead With This Humdinger of an Excuse

2 October 2024 By Alan Straton

The recent petrol price adjustments of 2 October 2024 refer.

In June 2024 The Port of Port Elizabeth (PE) fuel delivery berth was temporarily closed due to an incident that occurred at the Port.

As a result the Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy has approved the implementation of the revised transport tariffs into the petrol, diesel and Illuminating Paraffin (IP) price structures as an interim measure until the Port of PE is operational, with effect from the 2nd of October 2024.

Let’s get this straight:

  • The TNPA was the employer where the incident occurred
  • The TNPA then told fuel suppliers to collect their fuel from the East London Harbour
  • Despite the TNPA being at fault, the Fuel Suppliers failed to get TNPA to compensate them for the additional transport costs as a result of TNPA’s failure
  • So whom did Government, TNPA and the Fuel Suppliers look to to ‘tax’?

The consumer suffers again

Lets be real here – this ‘adjusted fuel price’ is just another TAX on the beleaguered consumer.

The actions above would put any competitive business out of business and is like if Straton Prepaid was forced to temporarily pass a higher price for Prepaid Meters to clients because the factory supplier was unable to supply chips. For us the solution is simple we will support a competitor able to supply.

Unfortunately the fuel companies, TNPA and the Government have us by the fried short and curlies, though!

The adjustment to the road transport tariffs applicable to petrol, diesel and IP price structures will range from a decrease of 0.9 c/l in Zone 9A to an increase of 10.5 c/l in Zone 8B.

The affected Magisterial District Zones are listed below:

  1. Albany
  2. Alexandria
  3. Bedford
  4. Joubertina
  5. Uitenhage
  6. Kirkwood
  7. Somerset East
