The all new Volkswagen Tiguan is now available for sale.

5 September 2024 by Guest Leave a Comment

The third-generation Tiguan looks set to build on the success of Volkswagen‘s top-selling global SUV package. Volkswagen has sold more than 7.4 million units of this model since it was first introduced in 2007.

The Tiguan has been in the market for over a decade in South Africa and sold over 41 000 units since its local launch in 2009. The all-new Tiguan redefines SUV aesthetics with a confident and modern design.

Expressive design and improved aerodynamics

The confident design is typically Tiguan and typically Volkswagen but still completely new. A distinctive feature is the higher, more powerful-looking front end with the integrated LED headlights. In-between, a glass-covered horizontal bar with an integrated LED strip replaces the traditional radiator grille adding emphasis to the unmistakeable Tiguan design.

The cleanly designed front highlights the fact that the drag coefficient has improved from 0.33 to 0.28. Athletic shoulder sections above the wheel housings dominate the silhouette. The wheels are up to 20-inch in size. A horizontal LED strip between the tail light clusters emphasises the width of the Tiguan’s new rear end.

The new Tiguan is available in three new colours, Persimmon Red Metallic, Cipressino Green Metallic and Oyster Silver Metallic.

New cockpit and infotainment system generation

Volkswagen has also completely redesigned the interior of the new Tiguan. With its high-quality materials and high finish standard, it breaks down conventional class boundaries. In addition, the components of the latest modular infotainment matrix (MIB4) are merged on board to create a clearly designed and closely integrated cockpit landscape that is intuitive to operate. The modules include the new Digital Cockpit (digital instruments with anti-reflective coating in tablet landscape format), a large infotainment screen with a completely new menu structure and graphics (standard display: 12.9-inches, optionally (15-inches), a new optional head-up display and a new multifunction driving gear shift with an integrated OLED display.

Seats for long distance

The new ergoActive Plus leather seats with pneumatic four-way lumbar adjustment and a pneumatic 10-chamber pressure massage function are a perfect match for the high-quality character of this SUV. These leather seats are optional on the Life derivative but come standard on the R-Line derivative.

HD headlights in the Tiguan for the first time

The new Volkswagen Tiguan is optionally available with the new IQ.LIGHT HD matrix headlights; this high-tech lighting system with 38,400 multi-pixel LEDs (19,200 multipixel LEDs per headlight) has been derived from the new Touareg.

The new Tiguan is the first MQB model to be launched with the newly developed IQ.LIGHT HD matrix healights. HD stands for High Definition, meaning a high resolution of the light sources.

Larger luggage compartment in the Tiguan

The new Tiguan has increased in length by approximately three centimetres. The height, width and wheelbase remain practically identical to the predecessor. The luggage compartment capacity of the new generation shows just how good the use of space is, although the SUV is only slightly longer, its luggage compartment capacity has increased by 37 litres to 652 litres (when loaded up to height of the rear seat backrests).

IQ.Drive, including Park Assist Plus

The new Tiguan comes standard with Park Assist Plus. Park Assist Plus is a system that is already familiar from other Volkswagen models: it allows assisted driving into or out of parallel or bay parking. The Volkswagen models take over control of acceleration, braking and steering for this purpose.

The driver assist systems of the new Tiguan at a glance are:

  • Trailer manoeuvring system (Trailer Assist)
  • Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC)
  • Hill Start Assist
  • Park Distance Control (front and rear)
  • Electronic Stability Control with Electromechenical brake booster
  • Travel Assist
  • Driver Alert System
  • Park Assist Plus
  • Proactive occupant protection system
  • Rear view camera system
  • Lane Assist
  • Side Assist with Rear Traffic Alert and exit warning system
  • Area View including rear view camera system

The new infotainment system in detail.

The new digital centre of the MIB4 (fourth-generation modular infotainment matrix) is the touch display of the infotainment system. The graphic interface, structure and menu navigation have been redesigned. The aim was to make operation simple, self-explanatory and customisable. To achieve this, the display has been divided into two touch bars at the top and bottom of the screen as well as the home screen. The driver can assign favourite direct access functions to large areas of the top bar and home screen. The individually configured top bar and static bottom bar remain continuously displayed when the driver opens various functions in the form of apps on the home screen. This considerably simplifies operation. Additionally, the new backlit touch sliders are located under the infotainment system display and are used to adjust functions such as cabin temperature and volume.

The large home screen in the middle combines the content of the most important apps on differently sized graphic tiles. Alongside classic content such as navigation, telephone or media, the tiles offer new functions as suggestions from the new voice assistant. If one of the menu options from the top or bottom bar is activated, this app is also displayed in the individually configuarable home screen.

The bottom bar on the display provides access to the air conditioning and seat functions and has a home button in the middle of the bar that lets the driver return to the central home screen at any time. This means the air conditioning menu, temperature settings for the driver and front passenger and configurable air conditioning functions can always be accessed directly.

The digital cockpit in detail

The latest MQB models have digital instruments on board as standard, with a display diagonal of 260 mm. The graphic interface was also newly developed and the range of functions extended. Using the corresponding buttons on the multifunction steering wheel, the driver can select different basic graphic configurations (views) that can in turn be individually assisgned functions. There will be a choice of four views: Classic, Progressive, Navigation and R-Line.

Special packages for education institutions

3 September 2024 by Guest Leave a Comment

Algoa FM has made it easier for schools from the Garden Route to the Wild Coast and through the Karoo to support cancer charities to raise funds for the Algoa FM Big Walk for Cancer presented by ISUZU MOTORS South Africa.

The 2024 Algoa FM Big Walk will be held simultaneously in George, Nelson Mandela Bay and East London on Saturday, October 26.

With Saturdays being traditional sports days for schools, the organisers of the 2024 Algoa FM Big Walk for Cancer presented by ISUZU MOTORS South Africa have made special arrangements for education institutions to participate.

Participating education institutions will be entered into a lucky draw to win R10 000 and an interview slot to talk about their school or college on Algoa FM.

Beneficiaries are the CHOC house in East London and the St Bernard’s and St Francis hospices.

There are two options for education institutions ranging from pre-primary to college or universities which cannot take advantage of the bulk entry option on event day.

“Several schools organise a fund-raising Pink Civvies Day where everyone needs to wear pink or a splash of pink and donate the proceeds to support the Big Walk for Cancer,” says Algoa FM marketing manager Lesley Geyer.

“Alternatively, they can host a virtual Big Walk around the school and its neighbourhood.

“Entrants paying the R70 participation fee would qualify for the limited edition pink Big Walk T-shirts,” she adds.

Entries and information are available on the Algoa FM website.

Strategy to Unlock AfCFTA Opportunities in Eastern Cape

3 September 2024 by Guest Leave a Comment

As the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) rapidly transforms the continent’s economic landscape, the Eastern Cape province stands at a pivotal moment, writes Mr. Idriss Mouchili, Director of the Coega Africa Programme (CAP) for the Coega Development Corporation (Coega), who recently participated in a panel discussion on Trade under the African Continental Free Trade Area at the Eastern Cape Export Symposium and Exhibition 2024 at the East London International Convention Centre.

The discussion highlighted the province’s strategic position in leveraging the AfCFTA agreement to boost economic growth, increase exports, and attract investment, while addressing regional challenges and opportunities within the Southern African Development Community (SADC) context.

The AfCFTA agreement offers immense opportunities for the Eastern Cape to expand its export markets in manufactured goods, technology, and services. Mr. Mouchili emphasised that the province’s industrial base, coupled with its proximity to key transportation corridors, positions it as a prime location for businesses seeking to access the vast African market. However, realising this potential requires strategic planning, investment, and execution.

He asserts that close collaboration between government, the private sector, and civil society is essential to capitalise on the opportunities presented by AfCFTA. The Eastern Cape should be positioned as a showcase of South Africa’s commitment to intra-African trade. By doing so, we can attract investment, create jobs, and improve the lives of our people.

Coega, with its proven track record in infrastructure development, is uniquely positioned to support the Eastern Cape in realising its full potential under the AfCFTA. Through the creation of Special Economic Zones (SEZs), industrial parks, and advanced logistics facilities, the region can be transformed into a leading trade and industrial centre.

Gqeberha, South Africa, September 03, 2024. Continental Tyre South Africa has achieved its continued certification for ISO 14001 and ISO 45001, confirming the Gqeberha-based tyre manufacturer’s proven commitment to sustainability and minimising its impact on the environment, while also creating a healthy and safe working environment for its employees, contractors and suppliers.

As the only Continental tyre manufacturing plant on the African continent, the German tyre manufacturer delivers products of the highest quality, supplying original equipment (OE) tyres to most of the major vehicle manufacturers and exporters in South Africa, producing a wide range of passenger and light commercial vehicle tyres for the replacement segment in the country, and exporting tyres to numerous markets around the world.

Continental Tyre SA first achieved ISO 14001:2015 certification in August 2015, and has maintained this status ever since for its comprehensive environmental management policies and systems. This includes an extensive range of practices that reduce energy and water consumption, minimise waste and bolster its recycling initiatives. All of this forms part of Continental’s drive towards climate-neutral production across its global manufacturing network by 2040.

The company first obtained ISO 45001 certification in 2019, and previously maintained an OHSAS 18001 since 2015, for its occupational health and safety management systems, and continues to maintain this standard in line with the latest ISO 45001:2018 certification.

Continental is committed to delivering a range of products and services of the highest quality while minimising the impact its operations have on the environment, and ensuring that its employees benefit from a healthy and safe workplace. There is no compromise when it comes to quality, sustainability and the well-being of its employees. The renewal of the ISO certifications for the plant in Gqeberha are testament to this.

The ISO certification requires extensive ongoing work and dedication from the Continental team, and embodies the company’s focus on continuous improvement and excellence in all aspects of its manufacturing operations.

The ambition of Continental Tires by 2030 is to reduce its energy consumption globally by 20 percent versus 2018. Continental is aiming to achieve climate-neutral production by 2040 at the latest.

The tyre plant in South Africa

Continental Tyre South Africa has a long and proud legacy in South Africa spanning 77 years, and currently employs over 1 100 people across its manufacturing, marketing and sales operations. Its local operations were established in 1947 as the General Tire and Rubber Company. In 1985, Continental AG and General Tire South Africa signed an agreement to produce Continental-branded tyres in South Africa. The local operation was acquired by Continental in 1998 and renamed Continental Tyre South Africa (Pty) Ltd, creating the foundation to become one of South Africa’s leading tyre manufacturers and an integral part of Continental’s global family. Empowering Female Learners from Local High Schools

2 September 2024 by Guest Leave a Comment

On 29 August 2024, the Coega Development Corporation (Coega) joined by Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality (NMBM) Acting Executive Mayor, Honourable Babalwa Lobishe, hosted a women-led event, including a panel discussion and insightful Coega Special Economic Zone (SEZ) tour in commemoration of Women’s Month 2024, in Gqeberha. The panel discussion, entitled “Woman 2 Woman”, was inspired by the theme “30 Years of Freedom Towards Women’s Development”, and aimed to encourage female employees and high school learners from the surrounding Motherwell area to pursue holistic development, said Dr. Ayanda Vilakazi, Coega’s Head of Marketing, Brand and Communications.

Hon. Babalwa Lobishe, during her keynote address, said: “The young girls sitting here today, are the torchbearers of this legacy. You have the power to shape the future, to break barriers, and to uplift one another. Remember, when women empower other women, we create a ripple effect that transforms society. We continue to face political, legal, social, and economic injustices. But let these challenges be the fuel that drives us to strive for a better tomorrow. Let us invoke the existing legislation and create platforms for women to advance, lead, and inspire.”

The dynamic programme offered a unique blend of expert insights and hands-on experience. Seasoned professionals from media, healthcare, and finance sectors led discussions on personal development, covering topics such as financial literacy, health and wellness, and harnessing the power of the media. Meanwhile, a guided tour of the Coega SEZ provided the Grade 11 learners with a firsthand look at the diverse economic sectors within the SEZ. This exposure offered valuable insights into potential career paths and the practical applications of their desired studies.

Ms. Telly Chauke, Coega’s Chief Sustainability Officer, said: “All of us are fundamentally connected. As women, remember that you have a supreme responsibility to facilitate the connection of others with nature and one another. We are stewards of the earth and its caretakers. In this journey, we need to learn from each other and take on the responsibility of helping each other. Today’s programme speaks to how we navigate towards wealth and wellbeing together, thereby creating an ecosystem where women can thrive and contribute to a better future.”

The observance of Women’s Month highlights the paramount significance of elevating and providing comprehensive support to women across all aspects of life. It serves as a poignant reminder of the ongoing efforts aimed at fostering an environment of inclusivity and parity, wherein women are enabled to robustly engage, assume leadership roles, and effectively articulate their perspectives. By providing educational opportunities, mentorship, and support, Coega seeks to create a more inclusive and equitable society.

Panellist, Ms. Nomazima Nkosi, Assistant Editor: Investigations for The Herald said: “As a media outlet, our role is not only to share information but also to verify its accuracy, as not everything on social media is trustworthy. In the media space, I encourage everyone to be mindful of what they post, as your online presence shapes your personal brand. Remember, what you do today defines your future, and your actions matter.”

Another panellist, Sr. Namhla Mfecane, Director at Empilo Healthcare expressed that women need to learn to prioritise their wellbeing.

”As women, we often put others’ needs before our own, neglecting our physical and mental wellbeing in the process. Managing stress and promoting mental wellbeing is not a sign of weakness, but a sign of strength. It’s about embracing mindfulness, setting realistic goals, and surrounding ourselves with positive influences,” she said.

Panellist Nadia Kassim focused on the value of financial literacy as an indispensable tool for future success.

“By learning essential skills such as budgeting, saving, and investing, women can break free from financial dependence and build a secure future,” she urged.

Coega’s approach to women development is also aligned with the United Nations Women on Economic Empowerment; and there is a growing body of evidence that shows that gender equality significantly contributes to advancing economies and sustainable development.

In the with the objectives of the National Development Plan Vision 2030, Coega, through its partnership with the Department of Basic Education as an implementing agent and other diverse stakeholders, fosters collaboration between schools and industry to ensure that learners have the necessary skills and knowledge to contribute to a prosperous and sustainable future.

Grade 11 female learners from Douglas Mbopha High School and Vulumzi High School shared their enthusiasm and gratitude.

Oneza Moraro (16) from Douglas Mbopha High School said: “Thank you to Coega for such an empowering event. It was truly an inspiring session, and I’m happy to be exposed to different sectors around the Coega SEZ that will make a meaningful change in my career path.”

Siviwe Mgcina (17) from Vulumzi High School, shared: “Today, we wrapped up Women’s Month in style. I’m really inspired to explore opportunities that can positively impact my future.”

“Coega remains dedicated to advancing women empowerment and socio-economic development throughout Africa and beyond, in line with its vision of being a leading catalyst for the championing of socio-economic development,” concluded Dr. Vilakazi.

Woodlands Dairy Partners With Co-Zee To Transform Branded Collateral Into Functional Bags

29 August 2024 by Guest Leave a Comment

Woodlands Dairy, a leader in sustainability, has once again partnered with Co-Zee to repurpose their branded collateral, such as gazebos, banners, and flags, into functional bags.

This initiative highlights Woodlands Dairy’s dedication to sustainability, emphasising recycling and waste reduction as key elements of their environmental efforts. Re-using is one of the 4Rs of effective waste management, alongside recycling, reducing, and recovering.

Ziona van den Heever, owner of Co-Zee, is thrilled to be part of this project again. “It’s a brilliant initiative that allows us to re-use materials, create jobs, and provide income. We teach new team members the basics, from measuring and cutting to sewing, until the product is complete. Every person we teach is a great reward and contributes to a stronger country.”

She mentions that she had two apprentices last year. “I gave each of them a sewing machine, and one started her own business making beautiful African dresses. We not only manufacture bags but also work with canvas to make bean bags, covers, and more. So far, we’ve made around 400 bags, with another 300 on the way, all from our home in Jeffreys Bay. Each bag is unique, strong, and versatile. Seeing them in the community is a joy.”

Marisa Maccaferri, Marketing Executive of Woodlands Dairy, explains that as a large company with numerous brands, they generate a significant amount of branded collateral that becomes outdated or worn out. “These items turn into waste when they can no longer be used. After last year’s success, we partnered with Co-Zee again to repurpose them. This collaboration helps upskill community members, generates revenue, supports other businesses, and boosts the local economy. Small businesses and entrepreneurs contribute to a thriving community, increased employment, and overall growth. Together, we can make a big difference, one step at a time.”
