No stretch of sail-able water is safe from sailors, take the Boardwalk Lake as an example – as Radio Controlled sailing returns to the waters of the lake this Saturday 10 March from 10:00 am.
After a successful regatta on 22 October 2011, members of the Algoa Bay Yacht Club Radio Controlled sailing division will once again descend on the Boardwalk Lake and showcase their Micro Magic, R36 and One Metre model yachts.
These identical yachts are built to scale and sail against each other on miniature courses laid down by the race officers. Racing is quick and exciting as the boats jockey for position on the start line. The wind lines on the Boardwalk are tricky and skippers need an experienced eye to gauge the best course to take to round the numerous marks to the finish.
Radio Controlled sailing places youth and aged sailors on an equal footing and is run according to the International Rules of Sailing.
Entry to radio controlled sailing is low and a great way to learn to sail without getting excessively wet.
Adding to Saturday’s entertainment will be local media who will be sailing these little wonders for the first time as they are introduced to the Boardwalk Hobie 16 Nationals to be held from 27 April to 1 March 2012.
Members of the public are welcome to come along and join in the excitement.
