The Inkatha Freedom Party says that it is extremely disappointed in the President’s vague and general remarks, during SONA 2014, regarding the establishment of sorely needed teacher training colleges.
IFP MP on Basic and Higher Education, Mr Alfred Mpontshane said “The President is engaging in mere electioneering. He provides no specifics or time frames in regard to establishment of these additional colleges. This is ‘lip service’ in its most basic form”
Mpontshane further stated that “We also remain very concerned about the high drop-out rate of learners in our schools. It is unacceptable that learners do not complete their secondary education. The President did note even address this worrying educational catastrophe”
“The National Student Financial Aid Scheme is also fraught with problems, with thousands of prospective students still unable to access funding. The mismanagement of the scheme has resulted in students not receiving the necessary financial aid. This is the state of affairs in our nation” concluded Mpontshane.
Even the much lauded matric pass rate is not without negative implications for further education and training. For this reason, the IFP supports the minister of Basic Education taking steps to review the passing requirements for matric.
