e-CAR Menlyn Helps Pretoria Drivers Prepare Their Cars for a Hot Festive Season

28 October 2026 By Alan Straton Leave a Comment

Pretoria: The holiday traffic is coming, and for thousands of Pretoria families the long road trip starts in just a few weeks. With summer settling over the Highveld, e-CAR Menlyn, the car service and repair workshop at 275 Bali Street in Menlyn, is asking drivers to bring their vehicles in early. That way, minor faults get picked up on a workshop hoist rather than on the side of the N1 or the N4 in thirty degree heat.

The thinking behind the advice is simple. After a winter of short, stop-start trips to the office and the school gate around the east of the city, a car can seem perfectly healthy while hiding worn brake pads, old coolant, a battery near the end of its life or an air conditioner slowly leaking refrigerant. Put that same car on the highway for hours, fully loaded and in high temperatures, and those hidden issues are the ones most likely to end in a breakdown. Families who book a car service in Pretoria now, while there are still open slots, can sort out any problems when it suits them rather than when the car decides.

Cool air is a safety issue, not just a comfort one

Plenty of motorists only realise summer has arrived when the vents start blowing warm air. That can feel like a minor annoyance, but on a long journey with children and luggage packed in, it becomes a safety concern. Heat and stuffy air wear a driver down and dull their concentration, and an aircon that can’t demist the windscreen during an afternoon thunderstorm makes the road harder to see.

At e-CAR Menlyn, aircon regas in Pretoria is handled as a complete procedure, not a fast top-up. The workshop explains that it starts by safely removing any old refrigerant with specialised equipment, which also clears out contaminants that have built up over time. Technicians then look for leaks and damage, which can involve checking hoses, connections and the compressor and running pressure tests. Only after that is the system refilled with the refrigerant type and quantity the vehicle manufacturer specifies. It is pressure tested again and run to make sure it cools properly, and a final inspection completes the job.

The reason for all these steps is that an aircon rarely loses gas without a cause. Topping up a leaking system might buy a week or two of cold air, but it seldom lasts the season. Tracking down the leak first is what keeps the cabin comfortable on the return trip in January, not only on the way out in December.

Looking beyond the aircon before a long trip

e-CAR Menlyn also urges drivers to consider the parts of a car that work hardest on a hot, long-distance journey. With a full load, the brakes have more weight to stop and get heavy use on long descents. The cooling system must hold the engine at a safe temperature both at highway speed and when crawling in holiday traffic. Tyres, suspension and steering absorb the punishment of long distances and bumpy country roads. And a battery that battled through chilly winter mornings may be close to giving up.

The workshop handles minor and major services along with repairs to engines, transmissions, suspension and steering, brakes, electrical systems, air conditioning and heating, and fuel systems. Safety checks and diagnostics are also on offer, so a driver who doesn’t know what is wrong can have the fault properly identified before any work starts. For a family about to travel, this means a single booking can take care of the routine service that is due as well as any repairs the inspection reveals.

Finding the real fault first

Today’s vehicles are packed with sensors and control units, so one warning light on the dash can mean any number of things. According to e-CAR Menlyn, its technicians rely on Bosch diagnostic equipment and modern workshop processes to find the true cause, instead of swapping parts on a hunch. For the motorist, that translates into fewer unexpected costs and a better chance of the problem being fixed the first time round.

This matters most just before a holiday. If the engine light comes on, the car starts drifting to one side or the brakes develop a new sound, a qualified mechanic in Pretoria can find the cause and fix it, rather than the driver crossing their fingers for another two thousand kilometres.

Industry approval that gives drivers recourse

Trust plays a big part in deciding who works on your car. e-CAR Menlyn carries approval from the RMI (Retail Motor Industry Organisation), MIWA and the AA. On its website, the workshop notes that the RMI is recognised as a leading voice in South Africa’s automotive aftermarket, and that customers of a graded workshop can expect fair pricing, good service and sound workmanship, along with recourse for complaints should something go wrong.

Drivers looking for that peace of mind before handing over their keys can choose an RMI approved workshop in Pretoria, knowing the business sits within an established industry framework instead of operating as an unaccredited garage. It is a point worth weighing at this time of year, when workshops fill up and it is tempting to simply go wherever has the first opening.

Newer cars under warranty or service plan can come too

Owners of newer vehicles often worry that an independent workshop will put their warranty at risk. e-CAR Menlyn says it services and repairs every make and model, including cars still under manufacturer warranties and service plans. The workshop also backs the Right to Repair initiative, which rests on the idea that motorists should be free to choose where their vehicle is serviced and repaired without endangering their factory warranty.

Households with several vehicles can therefore keep the everyday runaround, the newer SUV and the bakkie all with one workshop that knows each of them, instead of dividing the work between dealerships and other garages.

A Menlyn fixture for over 25 years

Founded in 1997, e-CAR Menlyn belongs to the e-CAR national network. In more than 25 years it has served families, professionals and business owners throughout Pretoria, working on cars, SUVs, bakkies, light delivery vehicles and fleet vehicles. Trading hours are 06:30 to 17:00 from Monday to Friday and 07:30 to 13:00 on Saturdays.

The lead-up to the December break is among the busiest times of year for any workshop, so e-CAR Menlyn advises booking early. Bringing the car in during late October or November allows time to order parts and finish repairs comfortably before schools close, instead of cramming everything into the final week before the family sets off.

What to do before you hit the road

Until then, the workshop’s guidance for drivers boils down to a handful of steps. Check that the service is up to date, and book one now if it is due. Notice how well the aircon copes on the first hot days, and get it looked at if it is no longer as cold as before. Keep an eye out for warning lights, unfamiliar noises or any change in how the brakes or steering feel. And leave enough time before departure for any work that comes up, so nothing has to be rushed.

Pretoria motorists wanting to book a service, aircon check or repair ahead of the holidays will find everything they need on the e-CAR Menlyn website at https://e-carmenlyn.co.za/.
