The misery of the residents of Zosa Street who were forced to live in dehumanising conditions since the apartheid years will end in jubilation when the families move into their newly built houses on Friday, 30 September 2011.
The keys to the completed houses in Zosa Street in Korsten will be officially handed over to the beneficiaries who were subjected to appalling living conditions in the densely populated area, since the dark says of apartheid.
The project was delayed by three to five months last year after the contractor abandoned the site following a violent attack on one of their employees.
The Portfolio Chairperson for Integrated Human Settlements, Cllr Fikile Desi, accepted the keys from the contractor on today on behalf of the municipality, ready for the handover to the beneficiaries on Friday.
Cllr Desi said the journey to the completion of the Zosa Street housing project was not an easy one.
“The problems we have experienced in this area have been a lesson and the project has really proven that working together we can do more. The handover of houses in this area on Friday will be a fulfilment of the commitment that the African National Congress made in the Freedom Charter that there shall be houses for all,” said Cllr Desi.
He said there are more service delivery projects to come for the Zosa Street area. “This is just a beginning for this area. This is one of the projects that are close to Executive Mayor Zanoxolo Wayile’s heart, and we have delivered on our promises as a collective,” said Cllr Desi.
During the construction period the beneficiaries have been accommodated in temporary housing structures provided by the Municipality with temporary sanitation and clean water.
The hand over event will be held at Zosa Street at 14:00 on Friday.

Editors Notes: Follow the political twists and turns surrounding the community of Zosa Street HERE.
It saddens me deeply to see how the present political masters can trample on the grave of Terry Herbst by usurping and indeed claiming his years of agitation as their own and now are attempting to steal all the glory. We wouldn’t do this to Nelson Mandela, so what makes it right then to spit on the memory of Terry like this?
