Hobie Beach is a buzz with activity on alternate Sunday mornings for the Ocean Racing Series and leading the excitement of the Series are the youngsters taking part in the Kingfisher FM 5km Beach Run. 16 year old Munro Ferreira leads the Series for the Beach Run with 115 points from 3 race days whilst 12 year old Megan Snyman leads the ladies challenge with 135 points. In the 3 race days this season, Megan has collected the full spectrum of medals with a 1st, 3rd and 2nd place respectively.
18 year old Wayne Jones is untouchable in the open water and is looking to extend his clean sweep of 3 gold medals this season in the Dis-Chem 2km Ocean Swim, an event which he’s now dominated since October 2011. Keeping it in the family, Jones’ 20 year old brother Jason has a full house of silver medals in the same discipline this season whilst youngest brother Daniel, 16 years, has been unbeatable in the Dis-Chem 1km Ocean Swim this season. For the ladies Olympic open water swimmer Jessica Roux and 2016 Olympic contender Tarryn Els head the 2km and 1km leadies categories respectively both with 2 out of 3 wins this season.
In the Swirlers 5km Beach Walk, it’s young couple Juan Slabbert and Taryn Ferreira who lead the Series. Juan has 3 wins out of 3 so far with Taryn leading from her 2 wins and a silver place.
Registration for the Ocean Racing Series can be made on www.oceanracingseries.com for just R50 or at the beach on race days. The Series features 5 different events on each race morning which are run simultaneously to offer the entire family an awesome opportunity to come to the beachfront and take part in outdoor activity. Kicking off at 9am on alternate Sunday mornings, families can take to the water in the Dis-Chem 1km or 2km Ocean Swim, or they can stay on the beach and enjoy the Swirlers 5km Beach Walk or the Zports 5km Beach Run. For the youngers, 12 years and under, there is the very popular Crickley Dairy 1km Beach Run/Walk which attracts over 100 kids on the Sunday mornings. All kids receive a finishers medal from Sync Tooling and Projects whilst category medals are up for grabs across all events together with a chilled BOS ice tea and great lucky draws.
Part of the appeal of the Ocean Racing Series is the association with the Reach for a Dream Foundation and Rotary. Through the support of the Series participants, the Series tries to realise at least one dream per race day and the presentation of the dream is made between the kids and adult lucky draw prize giving ceremonies which take place around 10am on race days. With R1,000 cash up for grabs in the lucky draws and around 20 prize hampers, family members are only too eager to hang around after their event to see if they will be the lucky one.
For further information on the Ocean Racing Series or to register for Sunday morning, see www.oceanracingseries.co.za. Season 9 will conclude at the end of March 2014 after 11 race days.
