During 2022 the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality under the then leadership of Councillor Eugene Johnson established ten (10) communal water collection points in various parts of the city. (See: https://mygqeberha.com/list-of-communal-water-collection-points-stand-pipes-and-water-tankers/). At the time the city planned for 24 such standpipe installations.
MyGqeberha reported that the Stand Pipes in the Ward 6 area of Walmer Downs/Mangold Park cost R1 025 257.20 to erect. (See: https://mygqeberha.com/gqeberhas-r1-million-monuments-to-service-delivery-failure/).
Now, these communal standpipes are being removed by the City represent a monumental waste of resources and money due to the former coalition government’s knee jerk reaction to a crisis that never had a chance of realisation.
Heads should roll!
