10 March 2025 By Alan Straton

Let us Summarise today's adjustments budget below for you: R600 Million - for poor people R400.8 Million for service delivery Are we on a slippery slope to "Kaka land"? Today the Nelson Mandela Bay Executive Mayor, Councillor Babalwa Lobishe, at a Special Council Meeting presented her adjustments budget with these words: Today, I present the Adjustments Budget for the 2024/25 financial year—a budget that remains fully funded and break-even, ensuring that we continue to … [Read more...] about Are we on a slippery slope to “Kaka land”?

Why NO UPROAR Over the Removal of Standpipe Installations?

7 November 2023 By Alan Straton

During 2022 the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality under the then leadership of Councillor Eugene Johnson established ten (10) communal water collection points in various parts of the city. (See: https://mygqeberha.com/list-of-communal-water-collection-points-stand-pipes-and-water-tankers/). At the time the city planned for 24 such standpipe installations. MyGqeberha reported that the Stand Pipes in the Ward 6 area of Walmer Downs/Mangold Park cost R1 025 257.20 to erect. Don’t Confuse Racism and Respect

16 August 2023 By Alan Straton

It just so happens the bombardment of bite sized 'nuggets' of information one sees screaming past on the Ex-Twitter timeline does numb your brain and reactions. Unfortunately when one reacts it is normally in a negative, judging and/or condecending manner. We very seldom take the time to think about what the proper response would be and are almost always guided by our 'learned' response rooted in deep fear of being called out as a bully or, in South Africa's case, as a racist. Yesterday I … [Read more...] about Don’t Confuse Racism and Respect

If Only we DIDN’T Have a Water Supply Problem

28 June 2023 By Alan Straton

Then we could add this renewable (?) energy hydro power solution to our water supply infrastructure system in Nelson Mandela Bay. The basic premise is simple: Instead of burning off excess pressure through friction like a traditional valve, In-pipe energy technology converts it into electricity to be used by the water agency.? The energy consumed for water and wastewater treatment is around 3% to 5% of total global energy consumption. That number is only going to increase and its carbon … [Read more...] about If Only we DIDN’T Have a Water Supply Problem

Dear DA – Will You NEVER Learn?

18 May 2023 By Alan Straton

Hands Off Mayor Odendaal!

As one who wants to see the City run properly and has hope for the present political coalition in Nelson Mandela Bay it is with deep sadness that I write this in acknowledgement of the inescapable fact that the DA is like a small child in most homes - is only nice when he can get a sweetie or some reward, doesn't listen, doesn't bend, doesn't take well meaning guidance, reverts to type whenever the going gets tough and tantrums when he doesn't get his own way! I write this with reference to … [Read more...] about Dear DA – Will You NEVER Learn?
