Why I am glad the MS Queen Victoria is in PE to-morrow

18 April 2016 By Alan Straton

Queen Victoria
Queen Victoria to berth in Port Elizabeth

The Queen Victoria is expected to berth in the Port of Port Elizabeth at 04h30 on 19 April 2016. She will depart at 18h00 on the same day.

Queen Victoria is coming directly to Port Elizabeth from her last port of call, Port de la Pointe des Galets. Port de la Pointe des Galets or ‘Le Port’ is situated on Réunion – an island located in the Indian Ocean, east of Madagascar, about 200 km south west of Mauritius, the nearest island.

The reason why I am glad that it is to-morrow?

Quite simply – one less ship to be on the lookout for as we sail down the Wild Coast after leaving Durban on 23 April for Port Elizabeth. Once again we will be sailing on the smallest yacht (a Simonis 35 footer under Captain John Tudehope) in the fleet with the smallest crew (John, Sean Wiseman, Andrew Martin and I) as we race to Port Elizabeth in the Vasco da Gama Ocean Race – live tracking HERE. The Vasco has one of the biggest fleets sailing this century – 20 boats with the possibility of two more late entries.

The ‘sexy part of the Port of Port Elizabeth’ – the Algoa Bay Yacht Club – is just the place to have a sundowner on to watch the Queen Victoria depart from PE with her 2014 passengers and 900 crew at 18h00.

MS Queen Victoria (QV) is a cruise ship operated by the Cunard Line, and is named after the late British monarch, Queen Victoria.

Queen Victoria is the running mate to Queen Mary 2 and Queen Elizabeth. Until November 2008, she also operated alongside Queen Elizabeth 2. Queen Victoria is of the same basic design as other Vista-class cruise ships, though slightly longer and more in keeping with Cunard’s interior style. At 90,000 GT, she is the smallest of Cunard’s ships in operation.

Queen Victoria’s facilities include seven restaurants, thirteen bars, three swimming pools, a ballroom, and a theatre.

Passionate about Port Elizabeth and definitely NOT packing for Perth. Alan's ethos is epitomised in the words of Nelson Mandela; "I have fought against white domination and I have fought against black domination. I have cherished the idea of a democratic and free society. If need be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die." See more articles by Alan.
