As an aid to monitoring what content and images people are copying and pasting off of MyPE I installed a script from www.tynt.com. Tynt adds accreditation to any item copied off of MyPE – granted any technical savvy person can remove the accreditation link back to MyPE but Tynt is still a good average indicator of what is being shared.
One of the regular reports that I get is one that demonstrates where people are seeing, sharing and clicking on links back to MyPE. This weeks report shows a very interesting thing – the number of visits to MyPE coming from Forums is far higher than links from social media sites.
I can only conclude that forums have more authority than social media – in terms of the level of visitor intelligence and in terms of search engine optimisation.

What is interesting is that the least number of shares (Forums) resulted in the most visits – a double edge sword of immense value. The highest number of shares (Email) did not have the same effect, though.
Which brings us to an interesting point – social media is like bread and water, but authoritative web sites (such as forums, news, wikis and educational web sites) are like fine wine and crayfish!

Personally I think it’s because social media moves tremendously fast, so information quickly “disappears” quickly as a result. On sites like forums, news, wikis etc, the information is much more visible on a constant basis.
Good point. I would put it another way, though and say that social media is the shotgun approach – fire indiscriminately in the hope that you hit something …..
