We Must not be Silly Here

11 January 2015 By Port Elizabethan

Dear MyPE

A local newspaper’s recent attribution of the loss of sand on Hobie Beach as a result of climate change refers:

Whatever or if you believe in CLIMATE CHANGE as a statement or not. Attributing EVERY little sign to it is dangerously silly.

When I was a boy at school in George in 61, my dad and I used to body surf at VICTORIA BAY. A lovely sandy cove. BUT every now and again the sea would strip that beach karl of sand overnight. JUST BOULDERS LEFT.

So too, Lookout Beach at Plet. Dad and I body surfed there in the late 60’s, wonderful curls. Then about 5 years ago the sea TOOK IT BACK

But I knew a guy well who told me his granddad had told him that the Bitou River east of Plet had done just this in the 30’s & 40’s too.

The phenomenon at the marina at St Francis may well also be just this – NATURE DOING IT’S NORMAL THING – and man too doing silly things by disturbing wind blown sand flow channels from the dune fields.

Hobie Beach was always just a rocky stretch from early as I can remember until they built Shark Rock Pier. Engineers I do not think realized that this structure would have that fantastic affect to bring on the huge bulk of sand that it did.

My wife and I often walk on our BWB beach at the Zwartkops mouth and marvel at the vast change from time to time with millions of tons of sand that are moved day by normal day.

Regards

Warwick O

I also saw the article and thought; “No-one can be that dumb to actually believe that Climate Change is responsible for the loss of sand on a beach!”

    But…….. one never knows!
