Ward Councillor Update on Baakens River Valley Sewage

Just to put everybody’s mind at ease. I (Heinrich Muller) reported the spillage in the Baakens River to the Metro on 18 June 2011 when it was reported to me the first time and again on 20 and 21 June 2011 and have been following up ever since. I have since given feedback to the people who reported it to me on a regular basis and have also given information to The Herald and hope that they will convey the message to all via the newspaper (Don’t worry Heinrich – MyPE will also do it’s bit!). I received the following information from the Assistant Director: Wastewater Conveyance today:

“… The cause for the spillage into the Baakens River, was due to pumping problems at Woodlands pump-station. We are currently working on the problem. However it should be noted that the illegal ingress of stormwater into the sewer system, is also hampering this process slightly. We are optimistic that by tomorrow latest, when the stormwater levels have subsided, we can then complete the necessary repairs.  We apologise for the inconvenience caused, and it should be noted, we are trying our best to remedy the situation…”

If I do not receive a satisfying response/action, I will definitely take it further with the relevant departments as it has a negative impact on the fauna and flora of the area and indeed a disaster and totally unacceptable. I will monitor the situation and keep you up to date as soon as I receive any further feedback.
