27 November 2019 By Alan Straton

Tramways Unity Bridge

The new Baakens River Composite Bridge just upstream of the MBDA building. #alanstraton #mype #composites #bridge #river #mbda - Taken by the Editor whilst wandering aimlessly about pretending to be in the know. The following statement was read out at the event marking the opening of the Tramways Unity Bridge on behalf of MBDA CEO, Ashraf Adams: Good evening ladies and gentlemen, greetings to the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality Council and leadership present here this evening, led by the … [Read more...] about The new Baakens River Composite Bridge

104.6mm Of Rain ‘Empowers’ Baakens River Rubber Duck Joyriders

15 July 2012 By NMB Communications

Officials in the Joint Operations Centre could hardly believe their eyes when they saw two people joyriding on two rubber ducks whilst monitoring CCTV footage of a flooded Third Avenue Dip in the Newton Park area. The CCTV is primarily used to assist in catching vehicles not adhering to the road closure but nobody expected rubber ducks to appear on screen. Boom gates erected last week to keep motorists from using the road when the low level bridge floods gave the adventurers the perfect … [Read more...] about 104.6mm Of Rain ‘Empowers’ Baakens River Rubber Duck Joyriders

Baakens River in flood

15 July 2012 By NMB Communications

The Baakens River is currently in flood and the road next to the river is closed. The Joint Operations Centre, consisting of Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality's departments such as Disaster Management, Traffic, Fire and Emergency, Roads and Stormwater, Human Settlements and Communications as well as the South African Weather Services and the South African Police Services, are still doing a sterling job as we deal with flooding, fallen trees and a myriad calls relating to the weather … [Read more...] about Baakens River in flood

Friday Rant – UTI the Paint Dumpers

15 June 2012 By Port Elizabethan

UTI Truck

Received these images and note this week: Dear Alan, I could not believe my eyes when I drove through the dip this afternoon (Thursday 14 June 2012), and observed a UTI truck pulled to the side of the road, with it's doors open, just above the Baakens river. There was an almighty mess inside, broken paint cannisters and a large amount of paint lying inside the truck. The driver and assistant were removing the broken paint containers and paint smeared pallets - and scattered them around the … [Read more...] about Friday Rant – UTI the Paint Dumpers

Ward Councillor Update on Baakens River Valley Sewage

30 June 2011 By Ward 9

Heinrich Muller

Just to put everybody's mind at ease. I (Heinrich Muller) reported the spillage in the Baakens River to the Metro on 18 June 2011 when it was reported to me the first time and again on 20 and 21 June 2011 and have been following up ever since. I have since given feedback to the people who reported it to me on a regular basis and have also given information to The Herald and hope that they will convey the message to all via the newspaper (Don't worry Heinrich - MyPE will also do it's bit!). I … [Read more...] about Ward Councillor Update on Baakens River Valley Sewage

Baakens River Full of Sewage

28 June 2011 By Alan Straton

We have had a major environmental disaster in the Baakens Valley. Thanks to copious amounts of rainwater falling in the Metro in the last few weeks, and a lot of this ending in the sewer system, (that is a whole separate story) Deficiencies and weaknesses in our sewage system are coming to the fore. On Saturday morning 18 May 2011, while leading a group of Volunteers on an Alien vegetation clearing exercise, We came upon the sewer in the picture. It is below Gazania Ave in Sunridge … [Read more...] about Baakens River Full of Sewage

Will Sunridge Park Residents Please Refrain from using their Toilets

21 June 2011 By Alan Straton

Giving even more credence to my plea for the metro to only employ people committed to service excellence (See: Notes You Won't See in Respect to Employment Practise) is this short note from Steff Schenk: Tons of raw sewage has been pumping into the Baakens Valley since at least Saturday, probably before that too! See the images below of the pumpstation in Hawthorne and Gazania Avenue, in Sunridge Park. This situation was reported to various people, including Metro call centre, ward  … [Read more...] about Will Sunridge Park Residents Please Refrain from using their Toilets
