The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has declared the recent 2017 Ward Committee Elections free and fair, affirming the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality’s commitment to the rule of democracy.
A staggering 132 000 residents participated in these elections, an unprecedented turnout for a South African municipality.
Voter turnout is an indication of voter confidence in that their views will be heard by government. This is a resounding reiteration of the Metro having climbed to the second most trusted in the country, as recently published by the South African Customer Satisfaction Index.
The elections, facilitated by the IEC, were held on 21 June 2017 and the inauguration of these committees will be carried out at an event in due course.
This administration is committed to turning Nelson Mandela Bay into an inclusive city, where residents have access to a responsive government that cares. Functional ward committees are crucial to this.
Ward committees form an integral part of service delivery in all communities and bring government closer its residents. With this significant achievement, Nelson Mandela Bay leads from the front, setting the example for other governments around the county.
This is One City, with One Future.
