The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality came out tops on Monday at the Annual EPWP Kamoso Awards held by the Ministry of Public Works at Silver Star Casino in R28 Muldersdrift.
The municipality won the Best Emerging Contractor & Best Cooperative in 2009/2010 for its Ward Based Cleansing Programme piloted in 10 wards within Nelson Mandela Bay.
The news thrilled Executive Mayor, Cllr. Zanoxolo Wayile, who has ensured increased institutional focus on the Expanded Public Works Programme since assuming office in 2009. We are happy but are not surprised by this outcome. It comes as a result of deliberate and unwavering commitment job creation and poverty alleviation initiatives.
There were two programmes from the NMBM that were shortlisted in the National Awards namely the Ward-based Cleansing Cooperatives and the Pharmacist assistance Leanership. The Pharmacist assistance learnerships entailed training of ordinary community members selected for training in pharmaceutical services.
Launched in 2007, the Kamoso Awards recognize and reward public bodies and non-state organizations for excelling in implementing the expanded public works programme.
Over the years, the ward-based cleansing programme has provided sustainable work opportunities to more than 300 people, through the 10 cooperatives.
The cooperatives have received significant training in business administration and it has resulted in one of the cooperatives securing a contract with a renowned national company while others have increased their service offerings.
The municipality is in a process of securing funding for further training and development for the beneficiaries. The training will commence before the end of the current financial year.
The programme in the Municipality is implemented through the Public Health and the municipal Expanded Public Works Programme unit.
The National Minister of Public Works, Lindiwe Mahlangu-Nkabinde presented a municipal award to the delegation of the Eastern Cape announcing the NMBM as having the BEST COOPERATIVE initiative in the EPWP Programme in the COUNTRY.
