The South African Police Services have advised the public to avoid 8th Avenue, 9th Avenue and 10th Avenue in Walmer as well as Victoria Drive and Villiers Road in this suburb due to unrest.
The protest action follows the disconnection of of illegal electricity connections in Walmer Gqebera Areas G and N this morning at 08:45 by employees from Electricity and Energy Sub-directorate.
The removal of the illegal connections was prompted by a recommendation during a community meeting that this should be done to avoid damage to electricity transformers in the area.
The workers were approached by a group of people who claimed that they are community leaders and a request that they leave the area was adhered to around 12:45.
The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality condemns violence and willful damage to infrastructure and property.
